It is that time of year again, and I have never had much luck with TSO.

So who is the current prefered hoster for the PH massive now?

Still find them OK but jumped my own stuff because of the Godaddy takeover

So for the one in my profile + a couple of others I went for Mechanic Web and the experience has been very good. Only gotcha is you can only set 1 PHP version across all sites and it's Cpanel

For business Nethosted or Siteground

I'm not sure there's any clear winners at the moment. Really depends what you need but I tend to not put all the "eggs in one basket". I currently use a mixture of 123-Reg, Vidahost, Godaddy and Siteground for domain registration/web hosting. Email is also a mix of Google and Office 365. For hosting a Wordpress website I've been quite impressed with Siteground.

I'm also interested. I have two sites on 1&1, but they're just putting the prices up at the moment and it forces me to look around. I found an older thread on here talking about TSO and Vidahost. I only have very small sites, one personal and one for a club I am a member of, but might like to add some PHP / database stuff at some point. There was a comment elsewhere that transferring to Vidahost can add to the cost, though it's unclear what the poster transferred. I have no issue with just uploading my site contents again.

Great, so my "hosting for life" may not end up being that. Such a shame, Vidahost were amazing when I switched to them circa 2009 by memory. It does always seem to happen, they get where they are by being great at what they do. Expand rapidly and service blips a little, then they sell up so a huge company that is profit driven. Time will tell I guess but if it goes to st then I'll be moving frown Things did go down a hill when support was witched to Bulgaria.

Im involved with FirstServ.com

It's where all the Register1 hosting accounts are moving to, with a great team, aiming to provide "service like the old days!"

Bugger Jamie, just moved away from firstserv.

Although your basic hosting is expensive for basic hosting and email.

I'll see how TSO goes for this year and then look again.

Aye, unfortunately costs are going to have to go up to support a quality offering.

With Google cornering the basic email section of the market, and lots of people offering free / pennies web hosting, its not a segment that's rewarding to capture frown

Agree - I just moved someone to TSOHost for £15/year - more than adequate for a tiny traffic 4 page site. Vs. £129 renewal Firstserv. But for more heavily used sites will certainly try FS in the future if the R1 support level gets replicated.

£129 a year + VAT!

Firstserv website is basic to say the least

No prices for SSL

No mention of Letsencrypt

Can you get SSH?

Cron jobs?

Backups ?

etc ad nauseam

I was just about to say my Register1 stuff appears to have been migrated to First Serv and with renewal looming just fired off a ticket to ask whether their service would be an improvement on Register1's, mainly regards the problems I had with email being blocked by spam filters because of all the spam being sent through Register1's servers.

Now I see Jamie's involved I'm a bit wary of remaining (not really) :P

wink

Being straight, shared hosting will always come with an increased risk of SBL's, however the team are proactive on following up on spam reports and disabling rogue / bad scripts..

Cloud Servers will always be the better answer (or GoogleApps/o365 etc) if you really need email to be 100%

I wouldn't say I need it to be 100% but it got a bit ridiculous when every email you'd send would come back as undelivered because some spam filter had blacklisted the IP.

Funnily enough, I don't seem to have received any spam myself since the switch.

I just use Hostgator - I have one package with them and host around 20 websites on it... always been great; no down time; brilliant support. And all this from a huge monster of a company; it's not what you'd expect, but so far; I'm impressed and the value has been great. They helped with SSL on specific sites and always manage to answer any questions; however technical, with a quick turnaround.

It's perhaps not the personal touch some are looking for though.
