Had an idea for a website which just links to other peoples websites, sort of like a wiki of all things to do with that subject (fairly specific where google isnt a huge amount of use from experience) and where to go to find such a thing. Instead of trawling google to find what you wanted which could often take a few pages.

How would you go about making money from it? Even if it was just enough to cover hosting fees, the dev time is free as its something I would work on in my free time.

Google Adsense is a common one, you earn a small amount for every ~1000 views of your website from a banner ad placed there by google.

You could also use advertiser links (i.e adlfy) which redirects to a paid advert prior to linking away to content, although this can be irritating for users.

From a hosting perspective there are many, very cheap, ways of going about that too for a low throughput website.

Im not offering anything to the websites that I will link too. They arent really selling anything themselves.

Its more to help the public out than any main reason, not sure how I would get round the google problem other than try get to the top to get around all the related but not quite right things.

How many visitors are you estimating per month?

You mention the target sites are not selling anything themselves but is there any product or service involved in this market?

No idea frankly, few thousand plus once it gets up and running with all the content (will need fairly regular updates with new additions).

Its community driven content, no one at any stage is making money off of it except adsense as mentioned above.

I would find out the size of the market/community first before deciding on Adsense which requires a lot of visitors.

If the community has a common theme or interest then it can be monetised.
-email list
- on site advertising

How are the people who rank above them In google for the same queries making money?

Also if your idea isn't massively profitable, why not share it for more accurate advise?

A very small amount. You earn more (10p to £1) if/when someone actually clicks on one of those ads

However these days around a third of visitors (my own stats) are running ad-blockers so no revenue there

On a site with a million page views a year, my Adsense revenue is around a grand, which just about covers hosting and associated costs (database, backups, ssl certificates, bulk email, &c.), but not development hardware and software, and definitely not any time spent

No way to create the content without spending ££££££ on it really. I dont want it to earn me a income, just to pay for its self to help the public, sort of like wiki and its donations yearly to host it.

Use Adsense then, it'll pay pennies but you'll only incur pennies for the hosting anyway.
