Good Afternoon,

Looking to do the following as a favour for a friend:

- Purchase domain
- Build basic website. (Landing page with a few pics and contact details) Not great on code, so will need a basic template and builder.
- Host Email address on domain. Most probably forwarded to another address said friend uses..

What websites shall I use? Where should I purchase the domains? Can you recommend anywhere to host a basic site which is ad free and cheap?

I have used 123reg for managing my own personal domains (not running sites off them.)
I have used wix to create a couple basic sites and not had any issues with...

Would you recommend the above two options or suggest I look elsewhere?

Thanks in advance.

Dont use Wix, you will be stuck there forever.

Best way in my opinion is to buy the domain from 123reg, if you are used to that. Then get some Cpanel hosting, which will allow you to automate an install of Wordpress. Then use Wordpress to create the website. It's wizard based, including adding free themes, so should be fairly simple. Plus there is loads of documentation / youtube videos for such a popular platform.

The added bonus is, you are not limited to one provider. Its fairly easy to move it in the future if required.

Be sure to use the features to keep your wordpress install up to date.

Shopify all the way, £25 hosting and compliance, use a free theme and laid up some pictures.
Will take you 2 hours from start to trading (assuming ecommerce)

No eCom Dave. Literally a page with a few pics and contact details...

Well dare I say Go Daddy as long as no further aspirations, they cover the email as well.

What timescale?

Black Friday usually brings very good deals on hosting.

I'd suggest TSOhost. UK based and so far as I'm aware none of the iffyness that goes with godaddy

Another vote for TSOhost. Manage multiple sites through them and have never, ever had an issue. Good support. 1 click set up. Regular billing reminders and an accessible back end for novices.

Except that their parent company was quite recently acquired by Godaddy...!

If you set it up custom, you will forever be responsible for its maintenance.

Do yourself a favour, don't use TSOHost and the like, use one of the major platforms that allow custom domains, let him pick a template & plugins, Install mobile app on his phone etc and be done with it. Wordpress and so on.

Then when he has a problem, tell him to call, email or online chat them wink

For budget stuff Namecheap is excellent and the support is as good as many of the very expensive cloud providers. TSO are OK but the interface is out dated and basic stuff like an SSL cert is a pain to have setup unlike Namecheap which is a couple of clicks

TSOHost has WP. Please explain why I shouldn't use TSOHost? (Genuine question as I'm only technically capable enough to set up a WP site that has click and play installation like TSOHost.)

I have no idea if you should or shouldn't smile

Normally the priority for a new site is to generate traffic to it, and to do that you need to focus on creating content and so on. You want to focus at little as possible on any non-core work.

By using the hosted version rather than self-hosting, you are more likely to do that, seeing as the volume of Wordpress sites on the latter will be dwarfed by the former- it is all wordpress.com do and have done for a long time so it should be slick and trouble free, whereas a hosted site has other things to worry about.

If your site grows large, or your know that it is guaranteed to be a success, or there is a specific benefit that is essential to you or you actually want to learn to be more technical then sure go with self-host, but otherwise with the cost difference being insignificant when you factor in your time, you maybe happier getting on with generating content.

I'd say avoid GoDaddy like the plaque! If you've not done this kinda thing before and want something simple then Squarespace will be ok. If things grow you'll quite possibly need to move in time. Also be warned that their hosting does suffer considerable downtime and there's nothing you can do about that.

If you fancy getting a bit more hands on then hosting from United Hosting is superb as is their support (24/7) they certainly go above and beyond. If you have a basic hosting account with them and you can one click install WordPress. Then like others have mentioned, free themes have limitations, but they are free and if you find one pretty close to what you want you'll be up and running quickly. https://www.unitedhosting.co.uk/hosting/web-hostin...

Oh and others are mentioning maintenance which is a valid point, you can outsource that though to make it stress free, check out http://wp-maintenance-team.co.uk/

Hope that's useful.

Just to shed a little bit more light on this.

The site isn't going to grow in the future. As I said in my first post it's literally a landing page with contact details and maybe a photo gallery.
So ultimately I don't need to worry about scalability or traffic as all traffic will be direct.

I just need a solution that is easy to set up, reliable, ad free and easy to maintain going forward.

Any WP host then. It should be a one-click affair to install WP as the feature will be on the admin section that comes with a subscription.

So do use TSOHost even though you said not to use it?

So Wordpress is a complete overkill then. As you are already familiar with 123-reg I'd be inclined just to do it all with them and either use their site builder or get someone to knock up a landing page for you.

Agree with Bikerjohn, if it's not going to change much or ever grow then get a static landing page template from Themeforest and get that installed on some really basic hosting.

This is what I thought, but I wanted more input before I popped up with this... If in the future said person wants a fully fledged site then thats their responsibility and they'd have to start from scratch anyway - so I might as well keep it as plain and straight forward as I can for now.

Lord only knows what is going on here. 123-reg are just another host. Just like TSO.

I'm with TSO, and have no issues. I used to be with 123 and left for some reason. I genuinely can't remember why. It was years ago.

I'd go Wordpress myself. It's flexible and easy to change. for email either the google or microsoft offerings just work.
