A flooring company wrongly delivered some flooring (sent distressed oak rather than what i had ordered). Value £3,500. They could not rectify the matter in time for my carpenter who was booked to start 4 days later, so I returned it to the shop ( cost me £200 for a remover) and ordered from elsewhere.

They are now refusing to refund, saying I ordered the distressed wood.

I didn't get a receipt at the time as I had gone into the store and they only had 60 meters in stock but I needed 80 meters, they checked stock elsewhere and called me later that day to say they could get 80- meters, and I paid on the phone by debit card. I got no paperwork after the call or on delivery.

If ask for it, do they have to issue a VAT receipt? They have offered me £500 ' as a gesture of goodwill' but are refusing to refund the £3,500 as they say that is what I ordered. I have told them I have rejected the delivery as not being as ordered or as per the sample I saw in the shop.

I think we are heading to the small claims court and think I may need the receipt?

I think that they have to give you a VAT receipt / invoice if you ask for one.

However, if they do, I'm going to bet that is will say 80m2 - distressed Oak, supplied & delivered.

Yes they do have to give you a vat receipt (assuming they are VAT registered) with your name and address on it within 30 days. Check out the HMRC for their guidance.

Retailers such as Sainsbury's have a retail exemption for orders under £250 Whereby they can give you a simplified invoice without your name and address but they still have to issue a VAT invoice.

Yes they are a big national retailer, with a knob of a regional manager

If you ordered over the phone then do distance selling regs apply giving you 14 days to return the order?
