Need a work scanner - specific needs
Discussion
Hi there, I’m after a scanner/printer that does some specific things,
Decent double sided scanning rate
Email scans directly from the scanner
The email thing is the confusing one. The guy at the stationary shop said that all a copier can do is send to a computer and open up outlook with the scan attached. I keep however being told that it’s fully possible to do an email sent direct from the scanner, I think it may need an ftp sever or something?
I know it’s a vague post but anyone got any pointers?

I've certainly had printer/scanner/copiers that can email directly from the scanner. I think that the last one was a Canon colour jobbie, but don't ask me a model number.
I didn't find the direct email function particularly useful, though - it was a pain in the arse to set up, and took just as long or longer to key in the recipient's address as to scan to your computer, then attach to an email with the address picked from your Outlook address book.
Maybe they've improved, though, and maybe I didn't get on with them because I'm a bit of a luddite!

I think that it depends on your company's email infrastructure.
You'd have to pick a machine that's compatible with your infrastructure (MS Exchange etc etc).
There are also security implication if you need to use a mail server that's outside your organisation because the scanner doesn't directly support your internal infrastructure.
If you want emails sent to individuals then they'll have to log on to the scanner in some way. This is inconvenient for them and a maintenance task for IT.
I recently set up a system for a charity which transferred the scan directly to a folder on the users PC. This may be an alternative for you. The same maintenance issues remain though (setting up initial database of names/machines and keeping it up to date). Also each user's machine needs to be configured to share a folder for the scanner to write to.

Afraid you've been given incorrect info.
You can scan directly to an email address. Assuming this is for a business, you enter the SMTP settings into your chosen device and when you scan, you will receive an email from the scanner with an attachment (generally PDF, TIFF or JPEG - your choice).
I'm the sales manager for an office tech company and we sell copiers, scanners, printers and many other things.
Drop me a PM if you need a hand

With the Epson I've just bought it's not done at the machine end. Each PC has its own instance of the software on it, in which you can create multiple scan profiles (duplex/single/scan to PDF etc., etc.). The scanner has a control panel where each user can select their profile then the scan profile associated with their account. You can scan directly to an email address. Things such as scan to email just require a single setup at the user PC end (which can just attach itself to the default Outlook profile on the machine, for example). It will also scan directly into Sharepoint, Word, Excel and so on, all controlled from the scanner control panel using a one push system (no fiddly entering text at the scanner end).
Very impressed with it so far, but they're not cheap so probably overkill for casual scanning needs and not going to be the best where photo image quality is the priority.

Exactly as Lee says, in fact we have no actual scanners in our entire business, instead, every location has an A3 colour laser network printer that can also scan - we had to set up a generic email address on our company domain and now we just tell the machine the email address we want the document to go to, hit scan and away it goes, it appears in the relevant mailbox as being from "scanners@ourdomain.com"You can scan directly to an email address. If you don't have a corporate domain name then you can use a gmail account, for technical reasons Hotmail accounts don't work though

It'll depend on what the OP means by decent duplex scanning rate. A multifunction device is usually slow compared to a dedicated sheet fed scanner and won't handle high volumes reliably.
And whether the duplex is done in software or the paper is scanned on both sides by the scanner before moving on to the next sheet.Gassing Station | Business | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
