so it's £1.3M in 'fixed costs' notwithstanding electricity and other things for the first year of trading? Where do I sign up?

I saw the costs for a unit in the Trafford Centre a while ago and they were similarly breath-taking. OK, some of the shops are busy bit you look at others and they can't possibly be making money.

No wonder they can't compete with the internet.

I have a client in Meadowhall, but a food/beverage outlet. He does very well.

Even if the shop is doing well enough to be making £8k per week just now then, come August, it is only breaking even!

The increase is the bit that made me blink a bit

Imagine what that money gets you on an industrial estate.

Seems like everyone involved in retail from shops to landowners are too greedy for their own good.

I guess if it didn't work people wouldn't take the units.

There's row going on about a small development that cost £80M in a town near us and only three of the units are taken.

Well most towns have high streets that are dead. My local certainly is.

It's not a rent increase. It's a discounted rate.

The standard rent is £795,000 pa but it is discounted by 50% (down to £397,500) for 5 months until August 2018.

Quite profitable for a joke company, though.

Yup. I’ve bought from them for the housing association I used to run. Based on that experience I wouldn’t use them to sell anything.

True, essentially they had a big trough that they will feed out if and expect consumers to fill. We are beating them through the use of technology thank god.

77% profit plunge at JL was excellent news imo.
