Steel Work Shoes HELP :)
Discussion
Hey Guys.
Over recent years we have built up a decent range of workwear.
We have recently been approached by a manufacturer of Work Boots and shoes all steel toe.
Im trying to get my head around the costings and wondered if these goods were VAT Exempt as there are so many different contradicting bits of information online.
Dont suppose anyone knows?
Cheers in advance.

I think you'll find that safety boots are only zero rated when purchased by an individual for their personal use.
If a business buys them and supplies them to an employee then they are standard rated (20%).

On our sales sites I can only put in if the item is vat free of not :s
Tick box on checkout confirming private buyer and deductions the vat - self declared. We sell online and how is it possible for us to distinguish whos an employer or employee...

I actually posted a query here a few year back re VAT on safety boots. I purchased a pair in store from here https://www.arco.co.uk/search/Footwear-Men-s-Safet...
They where adamant VAT must be charged and claimed back if VAT registered, I explained at the time that they where a personal purchase, the sales assistant just shrugged his shoulders. If you look at their website, all prices are ex VAT, VAT added at checkout, no option to pay no VAT.
