Our BT bill has been steadily increasing, so I'm looking at replacing the office phones with a VOIP setup.

Our IT supplier has offered me an Avaya IP 500 system with 30 or so handsets for a couple of grand, but having piqued my interest I've been looking around at alternatives to see how the costs fare.

Vonage seem to be cheap as chips by comparison, but reviews are a bit hit and miss and I don't want to risk service integrity as they're business phones.

So any recommendations by way of alternatives (or for Avaya/Vonage) then I'd be grateful for them.

Thanks

I've found Vonage to be really good. I moved to them from another VOIP provider. We don't have as many lines as you.

The mobile app works well and with QOS configured on the router we don't have any issues.

Would recommend.

30 handsets is borderline whether you want your own PBX or a fully hosted solution.

Is your quote for a physical PBX or a virtual setup that runs on server?

For business SIP trunks I’d use Gamma through a reseller.

For a fully hosted phone system look at Gamma Horizon or 8x8 Virtual Office.

Another option is to have your own Avaya or Mitel virtual PBX hosted by a provider in a commercial datacentre. This should give you better uptime than running it from your office.

This. However, also run yourself a 5 year business case on SIP trunks for that many users versus good old ISDN. You may have 30 users/extensions but depending on what your business is & what your telephone usage actually is, the number of simultaneous channels you may need might be no more than 6 or 8.

There's very few business cases that ISDN makes sense for these days, most of the people I work with would ditch it in a heartbeat if they could break their contracts without penalty.

We use Gamma Horizon with about 20 handsets (about 10 in constant use and 5 of those circa 5000 minutes per month). We run them over a Virgin line with a Zen fibre backup.

There are very occasional blips but other than thay they've been reliable and decent value. We buy our packages through a reseller and get decent bundled packages that make high volume calling cost effective for us.
