Hi,

After a bit of advice , as I’m new to all of this. I’ve set up a very small online business over the past few months which will ship goods to customers. I use Stripe to process payments if it makes any difference.

It’s took a while but now my website is on google , and last week I received my first order of around £90.

However it looked a bit dodgy as the customers billing address and name was very different to where the goods was supposed to be delivered. They actually wanted it delivering to a delivery company which specialises In taking goods abroad and the name given also would be a name that originates from that country too.

A number was provided so I gave it a call and sure enough the girl didn’t know anything about the transaction. She appreciated the fact I’d got in contact and said she would contact her bank. Obviously no goods have been shipped from me but I’ve now got this £90 sat in my account.

What do I do with it? Refund it myself somehow? Or wait for it to disappear ?

The scammer even had the balls to email a few days later to ask why I hadn’t supplied the goods yet.

Talk to Stripe. Don't refund as it may also get reversed and then you will be out of pocket.

Refund the payment in Stripe, it'll ask for a reason. Select "Suspected Fraud"

If you don't and you get a chargeback then they will automatically refund the card, charge you £15 for the pleasure and it'll also be chalked up in your statistics. If you have a certain percentage of fraudulent orders then they will put a stop on your account and possibly close it.

Thanks for replies both.

I’ve lookwd further and it seeemed that refunding it myself stating fraud was the best option. Which I have now done.

The cheeky git has emailed again asking where his order is too

On a related subject .. does anyone know how to make Stripe only ask for 1 address?

Currently it asks for both a billing and shipping address and I only want to ship to billing addresses?

thanks

Not a helpful reply at all but I HATE companies that will only ship to billing address.

I understand why they/you want confirmation but it is piss awkward when you have two properties or two business addresses 250 miles apart

On the above post I am curious too.
Is it just me that does not work from home?
If you only post to my billing address and I am at work how am I supposed to receive it?
If you deliver to my neighbor who signs it then denies it where does that leave us?
I never buy online if I can't have goods delivered to my work as I know I am not in to sign for them.

To answer the above questions

Yes I agree it’s not ideal and I’m the same that I work most days. This usually means that I go to collect it from the local post office every so often which doesn’t cause me so much issue as it’s near my work. I never have things delivered to Work as things sometimes go missing in the past.

In terms of why I want to take this approach it’s quite simple really. At this stage I’d rather miss a few a sales from people who choose to buy from someone else due to the postage issue than I would like to loose maybe £100 worth of goods to a scam. As a small business which I’ve started in my part time the loss would sting.

Send him a reply and tell him to contact customer services on 0300 123 2040, tell him to be ready to give them the details of the order and credit card used.

0300 123 2040 is the Action Fraud reporting number smile

I buy a fair bit on ebay for my classic cars, I live in S E Asia, so anything heavy goes to my mates house in the UK, and I arrange shipment from there, mostly pick up on a UK holiday visit, but once I had 3 pallets there of engines and interiors, so we did it by sea freight.
I always buy in my name, but it got to a quantity/frequency where the local Hermes man asked my mate what was going on as he was keeping things not addressed to him, on a subsequent visit I actually meet the Hermes guy, I respected that he actually took interest in his deliveries.
Having a different address doesn't mean its fraud, I could use my mates name, main reason I don't is if its in my name he knows to stick it in the loft until I see him.
