I've been buying and selling on ebay for many, many years, and recently they seem to think they are Judge Dread.

No matter how many items I have listed or buy, they seem to feel fit to let their automated nazi-bot decree that one piece of info that i gave to a buyer (for example JUST a postcode so the buyer could see if I was en-route) is enough to ban me buying or selling for a full week as a "punishment" for supposedly disobeying the dear leader.

Today's incident completely grates my parsnip:

(potential) buyer, 4 weeks ago, asks for location to check distance and if X day & time would be OK to come and have a look at item Y.

I reply with "Yes that's fine, the area is DE73, let me know and hit BIN :-)"
Never hear back.

Perfectly innocent, will get buyer within 5 miles, no direct contact detail, asked them to hit buy it now.

Fast forward to today, I sold the item a local FB group, and cancelled the ebay listing.
Within 10 minutes of the cancellation I receive a 7 day ban from listing or buying AGAIN.

Contact (supposed) seller support and all I can get is cut 'n' paste bullst, zero sts given.

They are so big they dont actually know what they are enforcing, against who, why, how, or have any way to get through to anyone who can make any sort of decision.

The only people ebay care about are... ebay.

Hateful company, but they pretty much have a monopoly.

But why do business with them then?
By making them money for delivering st service only encourages them to deliver more st service.

You think that's bad, wait until they punish you with their final value tax. That's what happened to me, was selling a hardtop from a Boxster, an interested party asks for my phone number, I give it to him and get the week ban you've just had. A few weeks later I sell the hardtop on Facebook so cancel the auction listing and get a final value fee of £50 (hardtop was up for £500) added to my invoice even though they weren't involved in the sale or even knew it had sold. I complained and they told me to jog on. Basically, if you send contact details, expect to get a final value fee for the item regardless. Greedy bds, their final value fees take the piss, they should cap them at a reasonable level.

Only ever sold one item, a wireless thermostat for a boiler. 8 weeks after install the chap cobtacts me saying it's not working. Before i can offer any advice he has filed for a refund.

I ask him to return item and il refund him.

Ebay then refund him automatically from my account before i get the item. And yes you guessed it. The item never showed up. Bogus tracking number given

To rub salt into all that i was unable to leave negative feedback??!? wTF????

I still buy lots from there but will never use it to sell (other than a classified vehicle ad which has very different terms)

Low value stuff goes on forums, Facebook groups etc, sometimes to CEX or I'll give/throw it away. EBay simply isn't worth the grief - yes, you'll often get less cash selling via the other methods but you don't get the hassle either.

For balance, I’ve just sold two old iPhones, that I had redunctant in a drawer; a private registration; some wheels; audio equipment; a race suit and a carpet cleaner! Got a couple of grand in my bank for a clear-out; no hassle and all on one platform.

eBay is great when there’s no hiccups!

I feel your pain, eBay have become too controlling for their own good... too many bad policies that try to increase their revenue being touted as to 'aid buyer experience'.

I used to be all for eBay and concentrated my efforts there, but since a few brushes with over the top policies my website is now doing nicely where sales on eBay have stagnated. New products still go on website, but only after the website and social media avenues are done.

Never request or give out contact information, if the customer gives you their phone number make sure you mention to them that transactions must be conducted through the eBay market place, if you do have problems then at least when their CS team review the case they see that you are encouraging buyers to comply with their policies.

Problem eBay have is that of all the major websites: there are massively too many users for them to deal with on an individual basis and so all they can do is create rules for everyone and if you fall foul of those its just tough luck.I don't think they are arrogant or want to piss anyone off, they are just a victim of their own success.

It's so dominant that going elesewhere simply isn't going to work as everyone goes to eBay (or Amazon)

Stopped using eBay about 4 years ago after the debacle of selling an iPhone and eBay siding with the buyer despite him offer no edivdance of the supposed issue.

All the happier for not using them.

So, does this mean for items I list as "collection only", to aid potential buyers in finding my property to view the item beforehand, I can't put my telephone number or postcode in the listing?

I sold some large items a few years ago (beds, car bumpers) and put this info in the listing and didn't have any issues whatsoever with eBay.

Have things now changed?

The trouble is, a few were abusing the system, so have ruined it for everyone.

People were cancelling their listing if the buyer collected and paid cash, so the seller didnt have to pay fees.

Small businesses are especially shat on by these terms. We sell a few hundred items a month through eBay now, any inkling of an email address or phone number directed at a customer and we get a warning message. The other problem I get with this is older people who want to buy from me, they can’t work eBay/online effectively and just want to call and have someone the other end handle it for them.

Another thing they’ve banned for business users, not sure about personal, is any html or link away from eBay within listings. I used to use image hosting and html the pictures into the description as it looked good. I had to revise 700 listings because they stopped it.

I know a chap who used to do canvasses and prints on eBay who had his account shut for repeatedly giving his phone number out.

eBay see the customers as the people who buy things, not the people who actually levy the fees. You’ll say “why stay on the platform?” As a new growing business I can’t compete on my own website without first pushing sales on eBay to grow the business as a whole. Also, even though I send a leaflet with every order directing people to my website with a discount code, repeat orders still happen mostly on eBay if that’s where they first went.

I’ve had similar issues, tried sending some sort of contact details etc and got a warning
I’ve resulted to sending my details in a picture/screen shot, that way their system doesn’t seem to recognise it

They make their money from people selling. If you advertise on it free of charge, then I'm not surprised they get a bit funny if there's any possibility that they will miss out on their fee. I am guessing that so many people have done it in the past.

Just use Gumtree if you want a completely free service.

OP if you have been selling on ebay for years would you not be a business seller?

If so your details will be available, also a buyer can request your details anyway.

I’ve bought and sold on eBay for many years with little or no issues.

Just recently gone through a period selling a large number of items, all but one being hassle free. The one issue I did have, they sided with me not the purchaser.

Guess I’ve just been lucky, or maybe I did things right which helped avoid the pitfalls?

I've sold a few things this year on eBay,

Each one ran without a hitch (all electrical items too!) Luck of the draw I say, there are some good people out there left!

I was a little naughty as two of the sales were cash on collection outside of ebay....listing was cancelled and no fees paid. whistle

Because I'm not a business seller, or I should say, my business is not selling on ebay.

Speaking of fees, it's capped at £1 this weekend with this code/voucher
