Now that the kids have both joined school, the Mrs wants to start up a little online business. She's been having a play with Shopify which seems ok but i'm wondering if there is any way to link a shopify website to an eBay and Amazon accounts so the inventory can be sold across the 3 platforms and update across all 3 platforms as the sales come in or as stock is added?

Does anyone have any experience of this?

You can get Shopify apps to do this. Amazon have their own (for a price) and there are others for eBay. I don't use them, so I can;t comment on their effectiveness, but the tools do exist.

Amazon is already a very expensive way to sell. Our Amazon customers pay more than they would if they came direct to our site, but we're still worse off after Amazon take their cut.

BigCommerce does this by default I think...

How does this work with prime delivery? Do you get charged extra if someone chooses that option? Admittedly, I buy from Amazon for the convenience, but if it really is cheaper buying direct from the seller, and delivery is on par then it would be something worth considering.

I don't offer Prime Delivery and, frankly, I don't think anything that isn't fulfilled by Amazon should be on Prime, because Amazon can't guarantee it'll be delivered on time. If you order from our site, you get same day despatch which is, in 90% of cases (within the UK) next day delivery. Orders over a certain value from our site are delivered free of charge too, but everyone who orders via Amazon pays for delivery.

As a customer I've now had seven one-month extensions to my Prime subscription, almost £200 in compensation and double refunds on at least half a dozen purchases because they repeatedly fail to live up to their self-imposed promises.

I don't actually want my customers to buy via Amazon because of the cost (and we sell very little via that route because of our primary customer demographic), so I'm not going to pay Amazon more money to make it easier for them to do so. We don't sell, or compete, on price, so I don't really get much benefit from the Amazon (or eBay) bullpit.

We have an Ebay storefront, but haven't used it for several years.

Bear in mind that Amazon eats into your markup significantly. 20% rings a bell. We've not plugged into Amazon or eBay yet. We might do in future with a subset of products but don't want to do it for the whole let simply due to the loss of margin

If you are doing Seller Fulfilled Prime, you have to charge the same to Prime and non-Prime customers, and have to include postage in your price (next-day in the case of Prime orders).

Retailers usually charge less on their own websites, as they don't incur the ~18% cost of Amazon fees.

with regards to shopify and linking ebay and amazon there are quite a few apps that can do it ok but it depends how much you sell and to how many marketplaces. Shopify's inventory management is fairly limited.

I have all products i sell translated with different titles and description and priced in euro ect, shopify could not manage that on its own. What we settled on was Linnworks linked to shopify/ebay/amazon. Loads of options for title per sales channel ect and intergration into royal mail and the rest of them.

The basic Linnworks package for 2 users is £180 a month though but it solved all our problems.

We’re Shopify expert devs (plus next month we hope) and the official Shopify link to eBay and Amazon (USA only) isn’t great when we tested it. Have a look at shipstation - some compromises but low cost and reliable.
If your stuck on any aspect of the build we’re happy to help a PHer, for small builds I know a girl who does theme set ups etc.

Are you planning to use the Website as a stock management program, or are you looking to sell on the site too?

I dont know what your plans are, your product or your personal area of expertise - but unless you have something groundbreaking then getting traction on a new website is not cheap or easy.

eBay and Amazon are easy, but only if you can buy right. If you are planning to take an already popular item, buy it from a wholesaler and hoping to make £££ then you might be in for a shock.

As LDN says, I think Bigcommerce has some of this built in - but its just a basic feed. But please remember Shopify/Bigcommerce are also backwards compatible with something like Linnworks - so if you are planning to have a proper go at this Id suggest you start here. The admin ends of website packages (order/invoice printing for one) are very simple, as are the listing options for marketplaces. If you were to start with something like Linnworks you can build your inventory properly and then pass said inventory over to your site/marketplaces very easily and manage everything properly from a single dashboard - you then also have access to all the other features from the off.

Thanks for the replies! How much does Linnworks cost per month out of interest?

i have the bottom tier of their pricing and it is £180 a month for 2 users. You can then add more users if you need.
