Received a letter from the HMRC asking me to pay the corporation tax due. The only problem is, that I've already paid it - at the end of July.
I'll be phoning first thing to clear it, but wanted to know if there's anything to expect? Would I have to ask my bank to provide the transaction details for instance?

Did you definitely use the right payment reference? The number changes every accounting year. I once paid with the previous year's details (saved in my online banking) and it was allocated to my account but as an overpayment on the earlier year (despite it being the exact amount currently outstanding) rolleyes

Yup, copied the reference number from my accountant. Triple checked it before clicking send.
I'm getting anxious they'll do something wky and try to make me pay it again...
It's my first time so quite fresh to the whole thing

It’s a crap system. I’ve never got a receipt which always makes me nervous that something like your experience awaits.

Having said that when I have had to call HMRC they have been sensible and helpful so your issue shouldn’t be too big a deal to resolve.

It'll be fine. Explain what you paid, to which acct details and the date and it'll get sorted. I've always found them to be quite helpful with stuff like this when you get through to a person. Fret ye not smile

it'll be fine, but it might take a while to organuse.

Don't ever cock up your VAT though, as they're complete aresholes about it, they send default notices, with no phone numbers or contact details on, and when you finally get it sorted they dont tell you that they cancel the defult, but dont tell collections to look for the money so then you get another default!

took me a year to sort out, even though I'd paid on time

I was thinking the other day as I was paying my tax bill it would be a perfect system to scam people, many director contact details are public domain (companies house). Simply send a few 1000 letters out (copy a proper tax demand), make up an amount, say 2.5k , use a random customer number and have a new compromised bank account and sort code on it , because the system is so poor and it seems you randomly chuck money and hear absolutely nothing back a small minority would just do as he letter said then be surprised a few weeks later when another letter arrived

The CT people have been very nice when I've dealt with them. I had this problem last year when I paid CT from the online banking - the payment reference was the previous year's reference (the letter at the end changes). I got the letter about it being overdue, phoned them up and the nice lady said "aha I can see the payment has been applied to last years account" and in a few clicks she sorted it.

Give them a ring and whatever the problem is I'm sure they will help resolve it very quickly.

Got the same reminder in the post from HMRC yesterday also, both my reference and payment details have changed from last year. Strangest thing, is payment isn't due until the 31st Aug, and don't recall being sent a payment reminder before.

May be legit but if the HMRC bank account number has changed I'd do some more checking before sending any money. They have had the same corp tax account for years and I can't see it changing.

You can log on to the government gateway and check the payment status of all CT, VAT and PAYE accounts.

I phoned, the gentleman knew it had been paid, so must have been a bit of lag in the system. Phew!!
Happy friday lads and lasses!
