I'll give you the foul weather(but then wouldn't you want it for foul weather also?), but is there really much room in the back of these? I mean it's hardly a transit...

I wouldn't ...

A stranger won't take care of it, at all ...

I currently have a 18 plate hire car sitting outside, 2 of the wheels are curbed to bits, it's practically brand new.

which may well not cover a hire car...
so, how are you going to make it legal...?

simple answer is that for you to manage your liability and legal requirements will eat every penny you might make in profit - so I doubt it is a commercial proposition...

why not simply pass the word out amongst friends and family that it is available - check they actually have DOC on their insurance even if only 3rd party F&T and then have a pot for contributions...

Lots of 4x4 volunteer groups out there, Round about here, they get called on by the council to help in bad weather, snow , flooding etc. Our local one will use your 4x4 if you're not available personally. Just google 4x4 volunteer and your local area/town.

Just throw it on a few local "for sale" groups on facebook.

How is insurance going to work? only rent to people with their own fully-comp-drive-any-car policy? You'll need your own public liability insurance for when it breaks and runs into a group pf underprivileged disabled children and their puppies.

Public liability won't cover that and the vast majority of driving other cars extensions wont either.

I set up the national 4x4 Response network which co-ordinates across the different groups / pulls together the brand etc. - back in 2008 - you have to look through the fact that any organisation like this will attract a certain type of person - and see that at its core there are a lot of hard-working / self-effacing people who are there when needed (I have in the past helped by taking nurses to end-of-life cancer patients - which transforms the family's experience - when conditions were such that they couldn't otherwise get there) - not actively involved now, but there is scope to do a lot of good, you just have to filter out a few Walts who will always be attracted to it - you will recognise them as they have full off-road systems / lots of stickers / lots of amber lights / etc. but in the main, people will have the same kit in the boot (amber light to mount magnetically only when needed) and are quite normal people!

And that is absolutely fair biggrin
When I was a trustee, Cabinet Office offered us the ability to drive under blue lights... can you imagine 1,000 volunteers with no training and blue lights on their cars?! biggrin I said no!

Not worth the hassle

What happens when you get it back and theyve "tried" some of the local byways

As said not really big enough to transport anything meaningful

Even if people do use it for tip runs, it will stink

You can get a transit for £50 a day near me thats nearly new with breakdown and an extra £12 covers you for any kind of extra insurance excess

The liabilities attached to hiring out are a nightmare, and even the hassle of delivering/collecting car &/or keys will cause headaches.

I hired a car from one of the majors last weekend. Got a new 4x4 Vauxhall Mokka X, for £42 from Saturday to Monday.

As somebody else suggested, better to make it available for F&F informally than attempt to hire it to strangers formally.

Alternatively, its possible that a local glider club could make use of it, moving gliders around wet fields that are not on the public highway, but then you're back to delivery/collection/keys headaches.
