Just had someone request a quote and said they’d pay by bank transfer.
Email today to say they’d accidentally overpaid by £2162, please correct this and then they will give me permission to ship. Lol.

Obvious scam is obvious but should I report it and if so to who?

Has there been a physical transaction? If so, you need to notify your bank.

Yeah, paid cash in, some mistake that. Spoke to the fraud team, they’re on it but seems pretty common. Cash involvement less so..

I'm confused

They've given you money for goods

And it's a scam how?

Do they want it all back???

It's a fking risky scam business model isn't it.....

sometime next week the bank will realise its from a hacked account or suchlike and take it back , if matey had refunded the ££ it would out of his pocket

Bank are highly unlikely to report it as it will mess with their insurance risks. Might be worth reporting to Action Fraud then at least someone outside of the bank will be aware.

I had that a couple of years ago...

£35,000 order - pro forma invoice raised.
Someone walks in to a bank in London, and pays a cheque for £81,000 into our bank account
Get an email to say invoice has been overpaid, please send back the difference
Not on your nelly
Cheque bounces, and gets returned to us by the bank... Still have it here somewhere.

Isn't this sort of thing the Banks risk now eg 2,4,6 .. 2 days later shows in account, 4 days later can be drawn against, 6 days later it is secure and can't be taken back?

TX.

Edit - as below albeit re sterling cheques

Ahh har - innocence mode busted!

In that case, reply to buyer explaining that goods will be released once discussed with the bank.

I'm too simple!

Advice from bank having spoken to their fraud team is to sit tight for 3 days and call the fraud team again.

My suspicion is money laundering but I may be wrong. Worrying though, last thing I need is some heavies knocking on my door.

Quick update. Counterfeit cheque dropped on my mat this morning with a note from my bank saying my account has now been debited by the £2162 the cheque was for.

Don’t know why the bank initially told me it was cash but never mind, no harm done fortunately.

Pleased the scammer wasted their time and effort but I wonder how many get caught by this?

Be careful out there. beer

Email the scammer back and apologize for the delay...

Let's see how far we can take them!

PS Well done!
