Ebay 10% off - how?
Discussion
I think eBay are starting to loose popularity so more offers like these are now the norm. Just a couple of days ago they had a 15% off everything offers. Every week i get a £1 final listing offer where this time last year i would be lucky to one every other month. I think sellers are now turning to Spock / facebook to sell used items and retailers are now turning to amazon....
It’s just Ebay whipping up a frenzy to try and sign new accounts both B and C.
A decade ago when I started in the e-commerce business Ebay and Amazon were similar and growing at a similar rate - however we all know Amazon since went into overdrive and smashed it.
eBay with stale management bumbled along and ultimately never shook their “fleabay”, “second hand junk” reputation. Only a loyal customer base remained and they became somewhat irrelevant to new buyers and the younger generation.
This past year or two they have invested heavily in brands and have started to whip the search results into more of an Amazon like catalogue. They’ve also got a load of household brands onboard to promote trust and become more relevant.
These promotions are simply proactive advertisements. Instead of plastering the web with scripted and one dimensional promotions they are simply letting the public go at it and buy what they need - it’s great.
As for the costs typical fees are 9/10%, so these promo days whilst not free are not emptying a marketing pot but are nearly subsidised by the sales being made on the day.
For them it must be a no brainer, they are not profiting on these days and are paying through the nose on the 15/20% days - but we are talking about it now and I assume 100k new accounts sign up each time they do it - who are then blasted with emails to sell their unwanted gifts.
I think it’s great, as a large seller on eBay we’ve seen simply outrageous sales results and made full margin. My only concern is that in Q4 they have done far too many promo days and I am afraid if that’s their new tactic many buyers will wait for a promo to make large purchases. Let’s just hope they have used 2018 as a test bed to learn when they work best and they will reign it in a bit next year.

As what Russy said plus sellers always seem to get stuffed - so many eBay scams around and the buyer protection always favours the buyer at the determent to the seller - which, if a large business is planned in their business model but when its an individual selling the odd bit here and there, one scam can be huge. Just the very fear of this stops me using eBay (even for buying) unless they have mega feedback and cant find the item elsewhere.
Maybe its a perception thing but where eBay used to be my first go to place for stuff I needed, its now my last, if desperate place.
