Hi all I got a mate who is a well known liar, almost everything in his life is a lie apart from his wife and kid. Anyway he claims he works as a self employed builder, claims he's got his own registered company etc (he hasn't I've looked his company up and it does not exist) he claims he's got all the qualifications to back it up and is on checkatrade (he's not) he's worked the past ten years as a Labourer on sites that's all. Now he's claiming he's priced up a private job for a couple who wants an extension built on their house. Any real self employed builders out there can u enlighten me to how much money you can make off private jobs? Can you make a decent amount of profit? I imagine a real builder with his own company would make quite alot but this guy is always skint and blames it on the cost of paying for materials, labour, tools etc he says and I quote there's only a certain profit margin yet I'm sure a real builder would rake it in. Oh and he's never had a driving licence. Claims he runs his own company and gets all these big private jobs and travels to them by bus! Is it even possible to run a one man building firm without your own transport?

Very true haha he usually works on building sites (labouring but claims he's doing carpentry etc) but he claims that other jobs like a couple wanting an extension on a house or a guy to have a new bath fitted is a "private job" it's laughable I know

But seriously though I was under the impression self employed builders earn quite alot of money assuming they get regular work especially with their own registered company etc the way this guy talks about how much money he earns you would expect him to have a decent car with his own house/mortgage etc but he lives in a small council flat always struggling to pay rent and bills etc and only has a provisional licence.

I think you've got the word 'mate' mixed up with something else.

Hey we all have our issues, he’s a bullstter and you think alot is a word.

Also, try using some punctuation in your sentences.

A Company is registered if it's a Limited Company, which would then mean the builder wasn't self employed. Whatever his tax status, it doesn't affect his ability, or otherwise, to make money.

Agreed

My advice is you seem like you want him to fail and don’t wish him to be successful

To answer your questions....

You don’t have to be registered with anyone to be a builder
If you’re self employed it won’t show on companies house
You could manage as a builder by getting the bus and have materials etc dropped off but it would be tough
On an extension you can make great money. It depends how much you charge but you could make £100k on an extension if it’s big enough

Technically, if a person is running a business through a limited company, they are not "self employed" under general law or tax law.

However, a person can run a business as a self employed "sole trader" and refer to that business as a "company" if they want to. For example, Joe Bloggs, a carpenter, could call himself "Joe Bloggs Trading As "Chippy Carpenters and Company". That type of "company" is not obliged to register with any government agency, such as Companies House. The only "registration" required is that the sole trader needs to notify HMRC that he is operating as sole trader and, if his sales turnover exceeds the VAT registration threshold, he will have to register with HMRC for VAT purposes.

A search at Companies House will not reveal anybody who is in business as a sole trader.
