I have an idea for a website I'm thinking of setting up. I've searched online and cannot see anything similar.

I've been dabbling with Wordpress locally on my laptop and this would appear to be a good route to go down and mostly appears to do what I want.

I can sort of see a way to make some money out of it but my knowledge about making money using websites is very limited. The main purpose of doing it is because I have an interest in this area and it might be more of a hobby but if it did ever make money that would be great.

I'm really nervous about speaking to any website builders, specialists, etc as I don't want to give away too much detail. It's probably me just being extremely paranoid that the idea might get stolen and not based on any particular experience I've had. I also have limited funds to build the website so probably couldn't afford at the moment to pay for a specialist.

I have run another business for nearly 20 years now but very different to what this website would be.

Just interested in hearing from people who have done a similar thing, where built a website and it started making money.

As you've already discovered, it is very easy to get a site up and running in WordPress and there are thousands of themes which can help you make something which looks professional in just a couple of days.

In terms of making money you have four main options:

Ecommerce
Subscription
Ads
Affiliate Links

Ecommerce is fairly self explanatory, you'll need a product and most likely a method to fulfill it.

Subscription is very difficult as so much is available online for free, so you will need some very unique content in order to make money.

Ads are the easiest to implement, but you will need a serious amount of traffic to make any money.

Affiliate links are in my opinion the best approach, as you can tailor your links to your site content.

You say you're paranoid about someone nicking your idea, but the moment your site is live anyone can access it and if you have a truth decent idea copies will inevitably spring up. What is most important isn't the idea but the execution.

My recommendation is to try and get something up and running yourself. If you then decide to invest in a professionally built site, but builders will use a content management system like WordPress or Joomla so migrating your existing content shouldn't be a massive problem.

Website builds are indeed (relatively) easy, but how will you get anyone to even know it's there?

Also, you don't have an idea for a website, you have an idea for a business.

from experience of building 1,000s of websites, I am going to guess that you probably have a hobby idea and not a business... building a business through a website is not easy, using a website to grow a business is much easier... it is worth talking to a website company if you want validation of how commercial your idea is (feel free to pm me if you wish) very unlikely anyone is interested in stealing your idea, any decent company is far too busy... I have a dozen visble commercial projects slowly being built, restricted by lack of time due to running the main business and supporting my clients... not sure I need new ones to steal... however, if you have little budget, then it will be a challenge, and while wordpress has some advantages it also has disadvantages, and few very serious online businesses sit on wordpress - but plenty of hobby or lifestyle businesses do...

Whatever your business idea is, the tricky bit is marketing it.

"If you build it, they will come" is such a load of tripe.

Thanks for the comments, definitely some things to think about.

I think you've hit the nail on the head with the comment about getting people to the website and that is the biggest challenge. It's quite a niche area but would apply across a broad range of interests, if that makes any sense.
