One of these has opened up near me (Rawtenstall) in a large superstore, previously used as a regular Tesco, (There is also a larger Tesco megastore around two miles away still trading).
So far, from what I can see, after a few months, it has been a disaster...very quiet, car park less than a third full, sterile "warehouse" atmosphere inside, will silly offers like 5p off a bottle of brown sauce if you buy 12. Who the hell wants 12 bottles of sauce, apart from anything else it will go out of date.
Anybody else got a "Jacks" and how is it doing?
(Jacks is named after Tesco founder Jack Cohen btw.).

Is this a bit like Sam’s Club in the USA?
No idea really, the idea is it is supposed to compete with German giants Aldi and Lidl, but it seems rather expensive to me, goods at £1.65 you can buy in Poundland. I can't see it lasting a year, it's very quiet for the size of it, and people on local Facebook groups aren't keen.I hope it does succeed for the sake of the staff, but am not optimistic.

Mrs C has been to that one. She said it was rubbish - broadly the same prices as Tesco unless you “bulk buy”. Car park seems a lot quieter than it used to be when it was a Tesco. I normally get petrol from there as it can be 2/3p per litre cheaper than the Shell on the roundabout.Countdown said:
According to my eldest all the previous Tesco staff got made redundant rather than being TUPE’d across which seemed a bit strange.
No doubt some of them were longer term employees who got things like double time and bank holiday off. When I worked for Tesco (07-11) I was on a similar deal (time and a half iirc) but around the time I left they were just offering single time for overtime and compulsory to work if your working day fell on a bank holiday at standard time etc. Europa1 said:
The first one opened in one of the fenland towns a while ago. There was a brief bit of excitement in the local media, since when I've heard nothing more about it.
Yes, in Chatteris which is a small Fenland town, it was initially built to be opened as a regular Tesco store but they binned that idea and the brand new building sat empty for over a year before being opened as a Jacks store. There is an Aldi just around the corner, the car park always seems much busier at Aldi than the Jacks store. Personally the thought of buying budget end Tesco products, if their Value range is anything to go by, puts me right off.
Aldi is cheap but still seems to retain quality and taste. Their meat is so much better than Tesco’s regular offerings.
The Big 4 supermarkets (Tesco/Sainsburys/ASDA/Morrisons) just don't seem to be able to come up with a strategy of competing with the discounters (Aldi/Lidl).
I would imagine the issue they have is fear of cannibalising their own sales - i.e. customers shifting spend from Tesco's to Jacks which seems to be borne out by the comments in this thread.
IMHO, Asda screwed up several years ago when they bought and subsequently closed/absorbed Netto UK - they should have run it as a separate entity - yes there would have been some cannibalisation of Asda sales but that 'lost' revenue still would have ended up in the Asda groups pocket: https://www.campaignlive.co.uk/article/asda-acquir...
Sainsburys also screwed up when they entered into a JV with Netto to bring it back to the UK only to abandon the venture: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-36701062

Its going to be easy for ze germans to take big chunks of market share off the big boys as there is no competition when it comes to how efficient they are with their operation.
Its also a refreshing change walking round Aldi and not having junk food on promo pricing and every aisle end filled with bogof shyte that you didnt want when first set off for the shops.

Thanks for that - interesting readMy partner & I went to Jacks for the first time a week last saturday and we were pleasantly surprised! All the fruit & veg was as good and cheap as Aldi.
Mrs Fastchas went this week and was disappointed, she said they had hardly anything on the shelves. We will give it another chance but it may be hit or miss in there I feel.
