Seem to be on the rise, so many amazing consultants, trainers, gurus and industry defying marketing geniuses spreading their knowledge through ever more embellished case studies and examples.

I’ve never been one for LI I was out of corporate stuff in 2005 and it wasn’t much of a thing then.

Am I an old fart with a high level of cynicism or is this our brave new world?

2 are tickling me at the moment - one guy 3 years into reinventing himself as an online guru even selling “plans” for success while failing in every actual ecommerce project he tried, (actually that’s slightly unfair as one trinket site is doing a bit based on an unknown marketing budget and is never mentioned as a case study).

The other chap is so overblown (as an ecommerce guru) I couldn’t believe it was the same guy I knew quite well as a 3pl warehouse salesperson.

I've not come across those, all I get are the motivational post and virtue signaling crap.

I hired a 60 year old they are my best worker.
My new starter was late because they had a flat tyre. They sent me a photo. I sat them down and told them about my management style, I don't need evidence, blah blah. Wow revolutionary management style, basically you're just not a . But have to tell everyone that.

I know someone who's effectively been jobless for around 10 years describes herself as a ''freelance social media consultant''

I know for a fact she's never been paid a single penny for any so called ''social media consultancy'' that she has or hasn't done.

Its a general malaise these days, with people using puffed up (often self awarded) job titles in order to get that elusive managerial position. The problem is that potential employers seem to buy up this crap when selecting people to interview, so It obviously pays to build up your part.

I have the opposite problem where by my job title seems quite menial because other companies have started using job description inflation.

There also seems to be an obsession with obtaining as many contacts as possible.

When I was on LinkedIn, I was getting requests from people I'd never heard of, in industries I'd never had any connection with.

Like anything similar - the real power centres / influencers/ etc. don’t have time on Linked In and are not ‘made up’ by the quantity of contacts they have - They get on with what they actually do and their contacts are those few they actually know and work with...

The easier it becomes to join a ‘club’ (online or off) the more those core people retreat to their own circles

There is a guy who works at Mercedes Liverpool, Joe something or other and wants to go and be the best car salesman America has ever seen. See if you can find it, comedy gold.

Yup. One guy I know pretty well, his LI profile states he's started and sold (successfully exited) several companies including a co-working space, a digital agency and a SAAS platform, including having investors all around the globe.

What he doesn't state is that he took investor money to fund all of these things, before running out of said money before ever making a success of any of them, resulting in a hostile takeover by one of the investors (the only investor I know of), which left him I believe pretty much penniless. He then went on to become a "life coach" and now has some hemp based product startup!

One thing that boils my urine is business coaches that have never set up run or owned a business. How can you coach someone on something you have never done? I understand there are a few ponzi marketing things about that teach coaching but I just laugh at the cheek of it!

I made my mind up around the Highways-England levels of pinches of salt required around LinkedIn profiles over a decade ago when my then line manager wrote a glowing testimonial on a former colleague's profile, praising their technical prowess, their dependability and their ability to produce the goods.

The reality was that the former colleague left after only a short period of time when it became clear that they were completely unable to cope with any task assigned to them and would regularly go awol. My line manager explained that the glowing Linkedin testimonial was only a means of ensuring that an appropriate reciprocal testimonial was left on their own profile. It sticks in my mind as I spent a good deal of time picking up the pieces left by the former colleague.

My own Linkedin profile is just a listing of my employment positions and qualifications and purely for recruitment purposes. I stopped playing the skills endorsements game when I noticed it just kept asking me to endlessly endorse people.

How do you know him?

He's a nice enough guy, or at least he was when he was still based in Kent a few years back. Very determined to succeed and definitely embraces the whole "fake it until you make it" philosophy. Just seems to be focusing on building a fashionable startup, rather than finding a real world problem to solve.

I’ve seen some of my ex works colleagues’ profiles on LinkedIn and thought “you were the project manager on that? That’s news to me… and I was sat 15 feet away from you…”
Lead engineers – who weren’t
Project managers - who didn’t
Directors - who couldn’t
The cynic in me says there must be an inverse link between length of experience and knowledge quoted and the actuality.

I used to have to report to the guy below, I've lifted it from his LI profile.

He was an utter clown, he was the most incompetent FD you're every likely to come across, we used to call him Clouseau.

amongst many, many, many gaffes was this priceless one in front of 16 senior managers, the Ops Director and the Managing Director -

Sales guys "we've decided we want to offer £5 gift vouchers this Xmas"

Financial Director "So how much are we selling these £5 gift vouchers for then?"

Sales guys "erm, £5..."

Financial Director looking flustered says "Yes, but how much will they cost?"

Sales guys "£5!, or do you mean how much will they cost us?"

Financial Director getting cross at this point "No! how much will our customers pay for these £5 gift vouchers!?!"

Sales guys at that point just looked around the room looking for help, I was trying to stifle my laughter but I suspect the tears rolling down my face may have given the game away.

The MD had a face like thunder and I think at that point he had finally realised what we had all been telling him, the guy was unable to communicate on a normal level, everything was completely over complicated whenever he was involved.
