Adwords - Linking Keyword to Conversion
Discussion
Hi all
Even our Google Account manager is struggling with this one...
We get circa 15 leads a day come in with Conversions set up in Adwords and an email notification / database entry created with a time and date stamp.
Some keywords create stronger leads than others, looking to remove the keywords that provide weak leads.
We'd like to be able to show which keyword was the source of a conversion so that we can make a note next to the lead as to what it was. If we could see that 'keyword1' came in today at 14:42 and we had a new lead in the database at 14:42 we'd be able to manually link them.
We cannot for the life us work out how to do this. We can see conversions in ADWORDS on an hourly basis but not minute by minute.
Any advice guys and girls??

Someone sees your ad, clicks it, goes to your website, completes contact form?
If so then you'll need to set up a tracking event triggered by the contact form.
That should link it back to the specific keyword as a conversion in Adwords which should show directly against the keyword that triggered the ad click.
Should be quite straightforward for a developer to set up unless I'm missing something. Should be the same as ecommerce only instead of checkout it's form complete.
If they call you then you'll need tracking numbers and it's harder to link to a specific keyword (unless you use a different phone number per keyword I guess!)

Yes correct, that is the exact process. It does the problem is that we can only see it say between 11am and 12pm or 3pm-4pm within the Google Ads console. So if we get 2 or 3 leads in the same hour we cannot reconcile them.If so then you'll need to set up a tracking event triggered by the contact form.

Not too concerned about tracking direct callers, we can ask them during the call and make a note. Mainly the leads are 95% contact form and 5% calls from Ads
Response is.
Within adwords and analytics they won't be able to see the per-minute conversion to match up clicks on keywords to an enquiry / sale. There will also be a mismatch between adwords and analytics.
Typically adwords measures a click ‘conversion’ from an adwords ad impression to an ad click. The initial click conversion that is shown will take place at the moment of the click, but the actual conversion from a sale or inquiry could be later. An example: Somebody clicks on an adwords ad and enters the site on day 1, the click against your keyword is registered and is shown in the adwords account on day 1 within the hours timeframe shown.
The user then doesn't convert the same day, they look around, get other prices, see other sites and then come back to you a day later.
The next day, day 2, they buy the product on your site or make the enquiry. Adwords registers the conversion and sees it comes from the click on day 1. In the statistics within adwords this conversion will be shown on day 1, where your conversion will be in your database on day 2. If you get multiple conversions this way, then the times will never match up and there's no current way of setting tracking up to combat that, as an example.
Not all clicks lead to instant conversions in the same minute, hour, day or even week - hence the difficulty in making the match by minute from the database enquiry back to adwords.
