Becoming a Dealer
Discussion
I realise there has been a few threads like this however I'd like to ask my own questions and gather advice before committing to something I have little/no experience in.
I've always wanted to try my hand at buying/selling, as I've always done well in private resale and overall enjoy the experience of it all. I do understand that doing this as a means of making an income will make it much more pressure driven, take a lot of the enjoyment out of it at times and it's a very tough business to make work.
As far as I can tell the route to becoming a used car dealer is to register as sole trader, apply for trade insurance (I was quoted £2k, given that the cars I would be purchasing would be around the value of £5k max, I have 7 years private NCB etc), and apply for a trade licence with the DVLA. Is this the right route to take and am I missing much?
I've also been thinking would I need to apply for a warranty for any of the vehicles I sell? I understand dealers don't have to offer a warranty however it would be good to have given that I may be liable to make any repairs on the vehicles I sell within the first month and possibly after dependent on the car/circumstances of the sale?
Any other advice (other than "Don't do it").
I realise I probably sound very naive writing this however a lot of the info you see on forums mainly consists of people disagreeing with each other, asking why dealers suits are so shiny or just plain saying "don't do it if you don't want the hassle".

I'm sorry, but what a moronic thread. Just watch the news and read the other 6m threads on the same subject, ffs it gets asked every effing week.
If you can't manage the basics in life htf are you going to successfully buy and sell cars?
I'll likely get a ban for this and the reason is PH is now a haven for useless Snowflakes who can't even manage to wipe their own arses. If that's the case then f
k you too you d
heads, there are much more important things to think about right now.
The basics in life is already knowing the life lessons of those who have done something for years from the mistakes that they have made?If you can't manage the basics in life htf are you going to successfully buy and sell cars?

If I've learnt anything it's to do my own research, look into it and pursue it when the time is right. Cheers guys.

That aside job done, there is always humour to be had, even in education.
Bloke has idea for business, proposes idea for business on business forum, gets head ripped off for not knowing all about it. If he knew all about it he wouldn't have posted. That's what forums are for.
OP, this week is not a good week to be setting up a car dealership; whether your plans are wise or not I don't know, but gestate that idea, polish it and improve it, make it different from the other Joes and maybe one day if you can make the maths add up you will launch it. Whatever, good luck.

Man sets himself up for a bit of banter. If he can’t take it, he’s not going to succeed anyway, is he? Anyway, I don’t hear him complaining.
I would think, question one is, does he think he can do it? Does he think that he has knowledge to find stock and add value? That what it comes down to. What specifically is he going to focus on?
Most people who do well in the motor trade start out having had a bit of experience working for someone else. The lack of that is likely to lead to a few pratfalls, I should say. Plenty of people out there waiting to take advantage of the slightest hint of naïveté.

But if he can make it work this week then he's in clover. With no trade contacts, no ability to buy cars, and no ability for people to come view cars, i think its more like one to "do his homework" on in the meantime, as otherwise hes making an already difficult business area exponentially more difficult.I've a business idea that i could be starting right now but the reality is i'll continue to do my due diligence and any learning i can until such times as its viable.
Very few business ideas could be started right now and made to thrive.
