Am I the only one confused by this?

We're in manufacturing, we make things, that are non essential.

Should we close down, or keep going as it's essential we go to work as we cannot work from home?

Huge thread running in NP&E regarding this, if it isn't possible to work from home then travel to and from work IS esential, this is the jist of it

You close down because you are not making essential stuff. Just like the clothes shops and everything else non essential to survival.

That's not what Boris said.

I am in a similar line of work, we will be in tomorrow.

However, where possible office staff can work from home, phones diverted etc.

We could shut down but still have no clue how to access the mystery 80% to cover wages in a weeks time when payroll is due.

Thanks, clear now, we carry on, what we're making is non essential.

But we can't work from home.

Correct. The only businesses being forced to close are non essential shops.

what about deliveries? There's some confusion on that too.

" Takeaway and delivery services may remain open and operational in line with guidance on Friday 20 March. Online retail is still open and encouraged and postal and delivery service will run as normal."

very confusing, totally mixed messages.
Looks like we're staying open then, they're not telling us to close to so we need to stay open.

We are in manufacturing too. We are going in and delivering where we can today and hope there’s some more clarification today.
Good luck everyone.

I have a workshop that I travel to every day but as I work on my own it's not AFAICS a problem to continue doing so.

In this context "essential" means essential for your business. If you can't work from home you need to go to work, unless that's in retail/restaurant. But at work you should (obviously, I hope) keep the social distancing thing going and wash your hands regularly.

Basically the government are only shutting down places where the public congregate.

I have a similar opinion. I'm in the car on my own, I'm in the workshop on my own, and I can't see that it's any different than staying at home and going slightly crazy (with due respect to anyone who is properly crazy, of course).

I may well go there a bit less often, though, as I have that option.
