One of our companies is a property company that rents residential flats. Most of them are our responsibility in terms of maintenance.

Half to three quarters of our suppliers and tradesmen have packed up for the duration of the lock down, despite have a good reason to continue working. That being, we have critical repairs to attend to. It's "Sorry, I know you're a good customer, but it's government rules see".

We have a couple of flats occupied, where we had arranged for new carpets and we removed the old ones ahead of the fitters arriving about 2 weeks ago, On the morning of the fitting the supplier cancelled, leaving tenants with no carpets - one of whom is about to give birth. I have finally managed to get carpets fitted today for 150% of the cost, and the carpet supplied is the cheapest of the cheap. We've been royally shafted, but we had no other option.

A washing machine has broken this evening. We've had to pay about 40% more for a replacement because our usual high volume supplier is closed. We've basically told the tenant to buy one and we will pay.

To be fair, some of our suppliers and tradesmen have been and are being brilliant. They aren't necessarily the best at what they do, but after this is all over we'll make sure that there is always work for them if they are in need.

In times like these you get to see who you can rely upon and who you can't.

'Supply and demand' in action. Giving birth is an emotive card but has little to with carpets really.

Yep, that's how I see it and what stops me getting too upset about it.
