Morning everyone,

Has anyone had experience with Fiverr or suchlike?
I'm after a logo for a hypothetical business that might become a bit of a sideline for me.
I've just been booted out of my job so spending lots is not an option. I know what I want, I'm just incompetent with photoshot and the like.

Any other options?

I used fiver for my business logo, cost me around £30 and the designer came up with a few choices which we worked into a design I liked.

Please don't use online logo makers (I would say that though) they are cheap for a reason. They often either just steal other existing designs or use stock illustrations which is technically illegal.

What do you need I might be able to sort something for you as unfortunately I'm not currently that busy :-)

Its called The Dog Park, making accessories for dogs.
I sew them up myself because I like taking pictures of my dog paperbag
I had an idea of the fog park in a stack on the left and a palm tree outline on the right. I'm based in Torbay, famous for the palm trees.

What do you think?

I will be happy to pay for your time but it is just a hobby at the moment that may lead to something

With that brief, you'll get something on Fiverr for £10 or £15. I've used it a few times for some logos for various things and it works great for what it is.

I've used a B&W photo of one of our dogs for our property business. It was free, and people always take an interest when I give them a business card. At some stage, I'll trace an outline to make a simpler line drawing.

I used Designcrowd for the logo for my website.

You give a brief (as most companies work I suppose ) and I got designs from all over the world.

If you request a quote, leave it for a bit and you’ll receive an offer of 25% discount.

I got the logo, all the files in various formats, compliment slips and business cards to suit.

I was very pleased.

And this is my issue with these sites, they are asking a designer to basically work for free in the hope of getting £10 - £15 for their work.

This is also why you will get logos back that are more than likely illegal, copied and in no way bespoke to your company because they just fire them out hoping to bag £10

I'm, not saying people should go use a branding agency if they have a small budget, our prices for a brand are probably too high for a small business or hobby business but I can guarantee there will be a local freelancer that would do the work for you at a price within your budget and they 'should' be creating something unique for your business.

I'm genuinely not having a go at the people that use them, I'm having a go at the sites that exploit designers and get them to work for free.

I used these based on a recommendation posted on another PH thread. Gave them a brief and got a logo back for £20. It was fine. Nothing more. But it was £20...

fivver or fivesquids are both excellent sites. You get what you pay for. If it's a business idea you're just mulling over just go on there, get a cheap logo that will look fine and off you go. They are low cost because most designers are in foreign countries and don't need £60p/h etc Yes, some will be derivative but that's fine. You can always update it later on.

99 Designs is good as a next stage. More money but again you get a better logo.

Ignore the comments about illegal etc. I've never seen a logo that 'looks illegal' and I have used both sites on and off for 10 years. I have a excellent wordpress guy on fivesquids who updates my site for about £20-£30 a time (but sometimes as low as £10). He does a great job and does it quicker than I could.

For you, in your position, fivver/fivesquids is a great way to get a little logo to start you off.

You can ignore the comments about it being Illegal or you could listen to someone who has over 22 years experience in the industry wink wether it 'looks illegal' is irrelevant.

Now I will say you are highly unlikely to get done for it being illegal, especially small companies, the biggest thing you will encounter is the logo not being bespoke so you could easily see your logo being used by a competitor who has used the same site.

The biggest gripe I have is that they are asking Designers to work for free and it's just a race to the bottom, I'm sure you would feel the same if it was your industry that you worked in.

I've never really liked doing speculative work but unfortunately it seems expected of Design Agencies, now I have done it in the past but only when I have felt it was worth putting in the hours and it as in the main paid off.

Again I'm not saying small startups or hobby projects should be engaging Branding Agencies but there are always local freelancers who will do it for less and provide a better service than crowdsourcing.

Branding is a very important part of any business, use someone you can engage with, talk to and get their knowledge first hand, the designers on crowdsourcing sites will not give a toss about you or your business they just want £10 so will knock out designs left right and centre.

All IMO of course.

I have 35 years experience. Just saying.... wink

You are talking about completely opposite ends of the issue. A guy who has a small business idea and wants a logo should absolutely be using somewhere like fivesquids. It's pointless going for a more expensive logo or full branding unless he's going to be investing many thousands in the business.

After the business has started and is proving successful local freelancers CAN be a good next stage but you have to find them, talk to them and work out costs and, if they are any good. It's why sites like 99 Designs are so successful, it just much easier to manage even if you accept it may not be quite as good as finding the right local freelancer.

Next stage is full branding..

I appreciate what you are saying about speculative work but, as you know, it's been like that since designing was invented.

Oh I understand why these sites are successful, I'm not actually having a go at anyone that uses them, for the small startup business it absolutely looks like a good place to get a cheap quick logo and I suppose I haven't got an issue with the people using them, I suppose I just don't like seeing my industry cheapened.

I've actually seen big companies use these sites, I had a client who came to me wanting some marketing material designing using his new logo (he'd paid about £80 for it) this is one of the times that I did do some speculative work as the logo was cheap tat, I did him a branding piece and he couldn't believe the difference and was happy to pay our fees

So having said all that maybe I am looking at it the wrong way, maybe these sites producing cheap logos actually means some can see the value in having done properly, after all a client who only wants to pay £10 for a logo is probably one we wouldn't want ;-)

I still don't like them though and it just validates the idea that designers should be working for free.
