Hello,

Been reading away at Forums inbetween working.

Some of you guys on here have great experiences and was wondering if you could offer up some advice for a 25yo in a Rut.

Im a long term Temp Worker through an agency in a bottling plant and Im totally fked off with the place and a manager who is a total incompetent let down and is quick to tell you to talk to the agency when things get a little tricky, Covid has been a real eye opener in way he has treated other temp i work with who is 55 and been on the job 15 year.

Ive always took the work and progressed into my planned maintenance job. I Went to college when I first started when I was just a line worker and got my C&G lvl 3 in Motor Vehicle.

Been applying for Engineering apprenticeships for about a year+ now and had nothing other than lots of online tests.

I nearly got a great maintenance job in rail sector 32k PA in February, but because I had never worked in the sector never got it, but was a great experience and good to actually get an interview to boost my confidence.

My plan post Covid is to start working with my GFs Dad at weekends as he has been a trader for many years and has done very well for himself and means I can drop my weekend job as a support worker as Ive lost all motivation for that job and working for 9 quid an hour in dead end position.

So to sum up

My temp job when im on nightshift is alot more tolerable and the money is good with the shift allowance and its pretty stress free, so would keep that going for now. Full time positions are coming up for first time in years but I physically hate the place and the toxic small town culture.

Fri to Sunday I want to go to Auctions and do any prep/repair work I can get my hands on with my GF dad and get to know some of his leads and how he does Business so I can eventually start for myself.

Finally I was looking at going back to college part time later in year to get my HNC in Engineering systems (multi discliplined) would take two years to get so would nearly be 28 by that point and may aswell go to uni as who wants a 28 YO with just a college HNC and not time served.

Thanks for taking time to read my short life story ha.

Two thoughts for you.

I have a 28 year old son who went through various unskilled short-term jobs. After a while of him feeling very down as to his future prospects he took up my suggesting of training as an HGV driver, it took about three months to get through the various stages, he applied for and got a job immediately he qualified, on £27k this was a big step up from where he was previously. He is now four months into his new job and is talking about taking his class 1. Beyond regular driving jobs there are a range of other up-skilled driving opportunities. Well worth thinking about.

The other suggestion is think about the services, if you have aspirations to develop in an engineering role this could be a really good base for you, albeit at a modest salary. There are service roles that could meet your apprenticeship aspirations and if you wind the clock forward a few years' suitably qualified ex service personnel are very sought after when they enter civvy street.

Good luck with your deliberations and best of luck in finding the right direction.

For the moment, think about where you want to be in 20 years time. What do you want life to look like when you’re 45?

Really flesh it out. Not just “I wanna be earning 6 figs” but really put some meat on the bones.

Once you’ve figured out what that goal is, work out the steps on how to get there.

Essentially, what I’m saying is don’t try to take your current position in life and work something out. Reverse engineer from the end goal.

Thanks for the responses.

The thing is in my heart Ive always hated working under someone and the whole clock in clock out work culture it makes me sick the thought of doing that for next 40 years, watched my dad do it all his days and ive always told him i never want to be like him just making ends meet doing a unfulfilling job

What are your personal overheads like? Do you have many bills each month currently?

Stay with Parents
Have a NC1 Mx5 looking to sell on to free up cash and make a nice profit.

Car Insurance £108pm
Car Tax £22pm IIRC
Phone Bill £8 p/m
Food £30 PW
Fuel £25 PW
No Debt

Im very frugal with my money and save 60+% of my wage each pay however with current CV situation works varying at the moment week to week, bevvy industry is an essential business at this moment in time as it turns out, however Its giving me abit of normality for few days of the week.

All works off with my community support work job which is understandable.

Meanwhile just sitting in limbo about job retention scheme pay thanks to all the grey areas.

General Career Rules - for normal people ...

In your 20’s you work out what you want to do

In your 30’s you work out where you want to do it

In your 40’s you make a bit of money

In your 50’s you retire

Don't be in a rush, boost your skills, knowledge and experience. Nobody here is going to tell you a magical secret. Focus on what you want to do and what you have to do to be better at it than you were yesterday.

Keep your goals simple and achievable.

Ok so why not start something up? Living with parents is perfect time to launch a business, trust me, I got started that way. I also watched my parents do the daily commute and work jobs for companies and although I respect them for it I vowed I never would and since 19/20 I’ve had various ventures

Very clever thing to get into, a while back class 1 could pick and choose still can pritty much. Once brexit is over, no longer will cheap polish etc workforce who can drive a lorry be coming in and the price will go up again for that job.

Thats the goal and the reason I wanted to reach out and start working with my GFs dad to learn the ins and outs and get in the loop.

I also love the idea of an online store for automotive products, cleaning and aftermarket gear. Big learning curve but the way I would do it would be offering affiliate purchases and try hold some small stock at my house/loft.

Anyone running an ecommerce business ?

Yes mate, wasn't alot of interest on that post.

Just been trying to get through each day at the moment like most people, I struggle with my mental health on the daily so I have a set routine so I have something to focus on and achieve.

My thoughts fwiw...

Treat yourself a bit like a business. Plan for long term, keep expenses low, grow financial security, invest in 'training'. There is no rush.

Dont worry about not knowing what you want to do now. Just keep on a long term trajectory. Warren buffet said he doesn't believe in a 5 year plan because it's not long term enough but also too rigid to spot immediate opportunities.

Working with your gf dad seems a great idea and an immediate opportunity. Only good can come from that surely.

I have only followed some of the above btw. Stuff happens. That's life I guess...
