There is loads of video conferencing software out there. Some easy to use and some appalling.
But why does Zoom all of a sudden seem to be the software everyone is using? Personally I'd never heard of it til CV hit. Why would I use Zoom instead of Skype, GoToMeeting etc? And why is the Cabinet using it?

As someone else said - the fact ti was free, easy to use and pretty much platform agnostic meant uptake was big.
They went from 10m users to 200m in three months as a result of Covid-19 and it's been pretty stable.
Teams, Skype and a few others require infrastructure in the background - Zoom doesn't and offers the ability to see upto 49 people on a screen. BlueJeans is pretty similar, but lacks some of the features (clapping, thumbsup, raise a hand, etc).
I can see why Zoom is popular.

OTOH, couple of years ago everyone was talking about Vine, then it was WhatsApp, over the last four months or so its been TikTok, this week its Zoom.
When some platform or something suddenly comes from nowhere, and it's being mentioned everywhere, it's always due to a massive marketing push. Mind you, never installed any of them so I don't know what I'm missing.

I've been using Zoom for about 9 months or so - possibly once or twice a couple of years ago, even.
Like others have said, it's free for 40 minutes and you can jump back on for another 40 (ad infinitum?) if you need to. It still seems to be working pretty well too.
At work we use Skype and have just started to use Teams. Skype seems to be getting progressively worse as more people are using it - not sure if that's our IT system or Skype that's the issue, but Teams seems to be much the better of the two.

Most companies that I work with used WebEx and then about a year ago Zoom came out of no-where. My company and lots of others swapped to it as it had much better rates for corporate use. That combined with the free version and it is a *lot* easier (or was anyway) to set up than WebEx it seems to have dominated the market.

I have to say I'm surprised Zoom has become so popular when I've generally found Hangouts to be easier to use and more stable/better quality.
Hangouts is pretty good, but does not work in Safari on a Mac. I think this is the main reason Zoom has taken off, its pretty OS / Device agnostic and easy for not techy people to connect to from any devicefastraxx said:

I prefer Teams to Zoom, but both are pretty good.
I find Skype unstable, despite much of the tech being the same as Teams.
What is the benefit of teams over skype for business?I find Skype unstable, despite much of the tech being the same as Teams.
Also, I think that Teams is the replacement for Skype for Business anyway.
