Cloud repatriation
Discussion
Our experience is that it means different things to different people, but requests to us where the term has been used most frequently to include both the above (to private cloud, and back on prem'), but we have also seen the term used to request a move from SaaS to customer owned services (both in the cloud and not) and even where the customer wanted was to segregate infrastructure and it had nothing to do with repatriation from the cloud!
We ask a lot of question now!

We have racks / network in two London datacentres and have over the last year or so moved people from "As a Service" cloud systems back to a dedicated server(s) with HyperV for Virtualisation.
It only takes one outage on the magic cloud for people to realise they are fully out of control and paying 5 times more than they would be for pretty much the same hosted service.
We have a mixture of Azure / Private datacentre servers we manage for our customers. The big difference and bonus of the datacentre is that if someones server goes down with a hardware failure in the DC, I can send an engineer and fix it. Which is fully within our control. I have tried to deal with Microsoft during a full UK / Euro outage and its like talking to a brick wall.
Some customers with on prem stuff that needed a better way of working from home during the lock down, we were able to replicate their servers to the datacentre and point the users to that instead. This I would imagine will probably stay in place as a hybrid high availability solution.

I've never seen anyone paying 5 x for being in the " magic cloud".
Also if I wanted highly available it would be in a hyper scaler rather than a local MSP.
Hyperscalers are great for some workloads but very poor for others.
It's not even a function of people being miss sold, many have miss bought thinking that public cloud was the answer before considering what the question should be.
OP - Beeston would be the Person I would go to as a starting point

I have specialised in Azure Infrastructure for about 8 years following extensive Vmware and Hyper-v private IaaS solutions before that (aka a tin hugger)
Azure is not 5 times the cost - my experience is it’s about the same cost.
We have certainly had some challenges recently with capacity, but I trust Microsoft to deal with more timely than a smaller player because they have the scale, capability and reputation to protect.
We alone were requesting 1000’s of new servers to be span up, alongside just about everyone else - you cant expect them to have years worth of kit just sitting around because you want it with no notice at a click of a script.
I can delete those servers when i’m done with no penalty - smaller providers just wont allow you to do it - i know because I built and made the comercial models to operate them. We always built the road 20ft in front of where we were at - never 20 miles ahead.
There’s still room and opportunity for smaller hosters if they are agile and maintain all the correct governance around their operation (shared responsibility model)
Plus there is always things like Azure Stack which is Azure on your own private tin in your own datacentre if you really need to put your hands on it.
Personally I would rather pay for a reserved instance or a private server in Azure (tin as a service) and have it tucked up safely in a MS datacentre.
We had our fair share of complete outages at GS2 due to entire power failures leave and never return.
