Why do companies phone you up using an unknown number and then demand you go through security before they can talk to you?

They don't appear to understand that I as the receiver of the call cannot verify they are who they say there before I am expected to answer their 'security' questions.

How do people deal with this, I usually say I will phone back but I am 'trying' to deal with a company that is so disconnected this isn't working and is absolutely impossible to talk anyone.

Suggestions please.

You should set some really random security questions of your own.

You should never answer any security questions in this example for the reason you already mentioned. Getting back to them through one of their digital channels or a number listed on their website is the only option.

Because they need to know the person on the phone is the right person.

I agree it's perverse, but Capital One did that to me. I said 'I can't divulge those as I don't know who you are either!'. She agreed and and I got back through to her by dialling their main number. Ultimately while it seems a bit odd, some matters are dealt with far better and faster by phone than by playing e-mail pong for days, or infernal 'support tickets'.

Tried phoning back but the people you can call can't put you through to the end who called, it snakes and ladders but no ladders.

And yes this is Honda who can't tell their arse from their elbow.

RBS do that to me. Actually even asked me for bits of my online log in. And the guy agreed with me when I pointed out what a fundamentally stupid way to carry on it was.

Call back on a well know (for them) landline number. I never speak to people who do that either + also tell my old ish parents not to. Despite that my Dad continues to spill every secret known to man whenever anyone random calls him!

Give them a wrong answer. They will only know it's wrong if the computer says no smile

It annoys me as well, I always fk them off
if they are going to have security for my benefit and their's then great but they must understand that not knowing who they are will result in me wasting their time.
