UPS return at senders expense
Discussion
Hi all
Not so much of a question as a moan/warning.
I sold a book on eBay for £30 to a Russian. He paid the £30 plus another £30 to send with ups.
According to ups he refused to accept delivery, and they returned the item to me. They’ve just sent me an invoice as well for £33 return shipping. Yes, it is clearly in their terms that items can’t be abandoned in Russia and will be returned at the senders expense. So now I’m going to be £33 out of pocket. A very weird situation.
Anyone else had this?

All costs to return an item must be borne by the seller:

Not in this context- the book was sold by me as an individual. Not sure that the distance selling regs reply when purchased from abroad? All costs to return an item must be borne by the seller:

Either way don’t think I can do anything about it!

Your probably right. Business only in the UK.Either way don’t think I can do anything about it!
Its a fight you might win, at a cost of lots of time and maybe more money!! Lesson learnt.

Yep. Don’t think I’ll bother! Certainly a lesson learnt. Not quite sure what the lesson is though. Don’t sell to Russians? Don’t ship with ups? Never had the problem before so hopefully won’t happen again. Its a fight you might win, at a cost of lots of time and maybe more money!! Lesson learnt.

I'd complain to UPS. Can't hurt
Is it a customs fee or a charge for handling it?
Did you send direct with UPS or via a reseller?
Neither. Looking at the tracking they tried to deliver 2/3 times and he refused to accept it. No idea why. The charge is just for return shipping. Is it a customs fee or a charge for handling it?

Direct with ups.

Why would you not be charged? It's being transported back to you so you're being charged again. If it was a UPS error then i can understand but if the delivery has been attempted numerous times and rejected then someone has to be pay for the package to be returned.
Of course someone has to pay, but In this case it should be the receiver who is charged. Not a major issue for me in this case, but had the item been larger and heavier the return cost could have been huge. There’s the slight argument that this obviously happens for a certain small percentage of packages they handle so maybe the cost of the occasional return should be included in their cost model. At least you got the book back. Can't imagine you would have been happy if they had just destroyed the package. Did the buyer ask for a refund?
As the return cost was more than I sold the book for I’d have been happy with it being destroyed!Yes the buyer did ask for a refund, and opened an eBay case, but on me supplying the evidence he didn’t reply and the case was closed.

I believe less and less what couriers tell me these days, I wouldn't take that as gospel.
I agree. There were also emails from ups asking for his phone number and email address though, all of which I forwarded on to him. I’m not buying 100% of what ups are saying, but the fact that he didn’t reply to my messages or emails makes me inclined to believe them. Camelot1971 said:
UPS are one of the better shipping companies - maybe the buyer changed their mind and was just being a t

Yep - I use UPS quite a lot as they tend to be the most reliable. Rarely the cheapest, but you get what you pay for usually. Quite likely he was.

Why did you not use ebay's global shipping programme?
Works well - you post to the UK warehouse and they handle the post abroad. Sold a lot no issues.
Sadly it doesn't work with my ebay sales. Generally people buy a few items from me at the same time, and the GSP won't combine shipping, so it would work out very expensive for buyers and put them off. Works well - you post to the UK warehouse and they handle the post abroad. Sold a lot no issues.
Slight tangent, but as a recipient (not a sender) my experience with UPS has been horrendous, to the point where I now won't intentionally use a supplier that uses UPS. Unlike most couriers UPS over no real flexibility in the delivery. In order to change a delivery you have to create an account - give details, get a password etc - and then there is a drop down on options which use American phraseology that aren't relevant in the UK and don't offer the option to say something like "leave it with number 14". I don't want to have an account with UPS and give them all my details just to receive a parcel. I phoned them once, oh man. An example of a large company that offers and constructs its service offering around it's internal structures and procedures rather than prioritising the needs of the customer.

The website is a complete pain like you say. I've always found them to be helpful on the phone - when you get to the automated menu, if you just say "speak to someone" they put you straight through. elise2000 said:

That was lucky, as you got the book back. Maybe he decided he didn't want it any more - but he's £60 down so whatever he was planning went wrong... the only winner was UPS.If it was me I wouldn't sell to Russia or use UPS again.
