Looking for some advice from those in the trade or who have experience in this

My brother owns a fairly successful vehicle recovery and transport business and is considering adding an MOT station into the existing garage unit as another way of generating money that might be more profitable.

He already has a decent sized unit with office, ramps and potential viewing area but would need additional MOT ramp and testing equipment installed.
He currently doesn't have anyone doing admin as he runs all the recovery side himself.

At present he employs my dad (qualified mechanic and ex Mot tester) to service and maintain their trucks and trailers and a couple of other recovery drivers (One of whom is also a mechanic).

At the moment he is liaising with someone who installs all the ramps / testing equipment and his feedback (as expected since he sells the equipment) is all positive suggesting its a great wee earner.

He is thinking of using my dad and either himself or another mechanic to go and sit their MOT testers course.

Any pitfalls to look out for / advice I can pass on?

Thanks D

What part of the world? Mate of mine in Leicestershire is looking for a buyer for his garage and MoT business. Might be worth a chat with him.

Rough cost for an mot bay is 25 to 50k depending on spec and amount of work required for the install.

A lot of areas there is competition on price so around here (Midlands) its pretty much £30 unless you are a main dealer.

A test is approximately 45 minutes so he needs to do the maths and work out if it is viable for him

I've often wondered how my usual MOT place makes a decent living; large 2 ramp unit in an industrial estate. 3 blokes work there, mot is £45 and they often take 1/2 hours easy, feels like longer when they stop for a fekin chat and you're waiting!

All they do is tests, no servicing or repairs.

It's good for the additional work you can take on, i.e repairs. You just have to learn to tolerate the few DVSA employees who think it's their garage/business
