Currently we spend an enormous amount of money using 3rd party grab lorries to dispose of our waste, usually inert muck and hardcore.

What are our options to make this more efficient? Store at our yard and screen etc ? Or buy a grab and tip ourselves, however seems to be hard to find tipping at a reasonable price.

Trick is to send as little for waste as you can.

If you can identify a site that has need for soil up to 1,000 tonnes and you can confirm with testing that the soil is non-hazardous, you can send it to that site under a U1 waste exemption registered with the EA (you'll still have to pay for haulage). Beyond the 1,000 tonnes limit, there are other options buts costs a bit to get the authorisation.

The U1 can also be used for hardcore, again provided you can demonstrate it isn't hazardous waste. For hardcore your limit is 5,000 tonnes and if you exceed that then you're into the realms of environmental permitting which can be more costly than disposal.

as mentioned the cheapest option is to find a home for it that doesn’t cost tipping/ disposal costs.

- hardcore/ type 1, if can be tested/ certified loads of companies are always looking for cheap fill. demolition companies/ ground remediation/ civils/ utility contractors........

- re-use yourself, however to store at your own yard you are going to potentially need to get the yard set up as a ‘waste transfer station’ and get appropriate licence for storing ‘waste’ or processing ‘waste’. bit of a pain and quite a few hoops to jump through!

- our grab/ haulage company only charge us for transport/ haulage as they process the material for re-use. they get cheap material, we don’t pay tipping- win/ win!
