Most complicated or odd payment systems you've experienced

I'm happily long retired.
I made a career out of being a general manager, but with a smattering of financial experience. I've worked in many industry sectors over a decent period. Most of it was in SMEs, and my main job was to keep the owners out of jail.
During that time I came across all sorts of cumbersome payment methods. The ones that really got me were "applications for payment" where both retentions and CIS may be involved. Self billing reconciliations with motor trade warranty always bugged me too.
What's done your nut in?
Dodgy invoices from dodgy suppliers maybe? Overseas stuff with letters of credit. Pro forma weirdness where VAT payments are faster than the invoices you raise/receive?
