Yes, I know its the business forum but I really didnt know where to put it. I am hoping some home owners hang around this forum!

So I am looking to offer (free of charge, just helping) to help older people trapped in old peoples homes with doing a bit of facetime, communicating with family outside etc. Staff are busy so dont really have the time. I do IT as a day job and just want to spread a little joy and hope.

However, where do I start. I suspect the main issue at the moment is going into an old peoples home. Is it even possible to get into and out of old peoples homes at the moment ?

I have no problems writing letters to offer help but is it worth attempting or will it be seen as too much of a risk, despite the potential positive aspects. This is before we even talk safegaurding etc etc.

Just need a yay or nay and any other guidence anyone cares to add.

Are you wanting to install terminals in the care homes so that the residents can use it to speak to family?

It is a good idea, but I imagine the cost is prohibitive as you would probably have to spend a few hundred quid putting an iPad (or similar) in each home?

I work in social housing, and at present, our surveyors are struggling to get access to any residential homes for the elderly as the staff are now allowing anyone in unless it is vital. The security is pretty tight.

Hey!

thanks for the reply. I think you misunderstand. What I was offering to do was essentially volunteer, once, maybe twice a week to go in with laptop, ipad etc etc to help the older folk hold facetime sessions etc (or similar, all very much *what can we achieve thinking* right now)

Old 85 year old Doris for example would love to communicate with her grand-daughters but has no idea how to use an Ipad/Facetime. All I was offering to do was provide the people skills, technical skills and facilitate these old people getting to see their family.

I realise that a certain number of places already do this but its not on an official level where they can commit to times etc as they staff that are paid to be there are busy doing what they are paid to do.

I hope this makes sense, what I am trying to convey ?

Yes, that makes sense to me now.

Unfortunately, I think you may struggle. We are having difficulties getting maintenance guys and surveyors access at the moment, so I think it might be a bit difficult.

There is very much a mentality at the moment of "One person coming in with Covid could kill the whole care home".

I applaud your idea, and think it is good, but the access will be an issue I'm afraid.

That being said, all you can do is get in touch with a few residential homes near you and see what they say. Different places have different policies.
