Sorry folks, another Brexity question.

SWMBO is selling a second hand handbag and a lass in France is interested in it, but neither of them can figure out if there will be any VAT or other tax levied on it when it goes across to France.

Have had a quick look on the various pages in gov.uk about this but they don't seem to be very clear on a private transaction of a second hand item across borders.

Value is around GBP1000

Anyone smarter than me have any idea?

I think that as long as you get £1,000 for it, then just make clear to the buyer that they are responsible for any taxes etc that their country may wish to add. It's not your responsibility.

indeed they would be responsible, but we are trying to figure out if there would be any tax applied (as they will probably just return the item us in that instance)

this is getting messy, being told now that we have to have an EORI number, yet not a company / business, just a private individual.

This might be an off the wall idea.

List it on eBay, selling through their GSP system. Make it buy it now & advise the purchaser.

You then dispatch to their UK hub & they sort the rest out.

If you wait for £1 max selling fees it won't cost that much either. Just a thought.

UK are OK for the foreign leg up to £2,000 too.

As soon as the item is received at Lichfield (or whichever hub) all responsibility for loss is taken on by eBay.

Might just be a plan?

could be an idea for future .....

there does seem to be a bit of a gaping chasm in the process for the private individual that flogs a few old items each year (in this case the Mrs rotating her handbag collection paperbag )

Guess they will get it all sorted out in a few months .... maybe.

I suppose it depends what it costs new, but I'd be happier with a bag you are selling being worth a grand, than the square root of knack all biggrin

It seems to sugest 20% vat.

No idea why you charge VAT if not VAT registered. Maybe it's just a presumption and that the site is designed for businesses.

I've definitely been charge (either duty, vat or both) when I've bought from outside the EU and built that into my calcs but my wife or daughter used to buy anything from outside the EU as there was always delays and then a fee on top of the duty followed by much moaning.

As a consumer to consumer transaction, would it not be normal that the price is inclusive of VAT as neither party are businesses and have no way of recovering VAT anyway, so will not be paying their local taxman anything...as the VAT was paid on first purchase by the OPs OH?

As for customs charges, courier admin fees, etc. you won't know that until it arrives in France...as they seem to be making rules up as they go along at the moment.

this may be the case, just seems a bit odd that an item that has already had VAT paid on it (within the EEC as it was purchased originally from within the EEC) should then be subjected to a second round of VAT.

This is pretty much my understanding
