I have a need to furlough one of my staff on a flexible furlough i.e. reduce the number of days per week from full time to part time, so lets say it's 4 days for illustration purposes, so they aren't working 1 day per week and furlough payment pays out 80% of 1 days wages.

But the minimum period for furlough is 7 days - so how does that work with flexible furlough?

Do they need to go on 7 days leave just once then after that it's on/off as much as they/I like? e.g. 4 days on, 1 day off, 4 days on, 1 day off etc etc.

Flexible furlough is as flexible as you want. You can have someone in for 1 hour a week if you need to and furlough them for the remainder, you can also vary the hours by day and by week (e.g. production staff can be furloughed until an order comes in and then re-furloughed once it’s completed).

The same process as full furlough applies from a HR law perspective in that you have to give written notice and you should have a ‘lay-off’ clause in their contract.

When you claim on the HMRC portal you just have to stipulate the normal hours and then the actual hours worked.
