Hi everyone,

As the title suggests I am after a bit of info please, but please don’t name any specific consultancies or businesses.

- What Are the main services you use the safety consultancy for?
- Is there anything you really like or dislike about the service you get?
- Is there anything that you’ve struggled to get from safety consultancies?

Any insights greatly appreciated,

Thank you,

Using a consultancy, safety, or otherwise, is often a case of giving them your watch so they can tell you the time.

As regards a safety consultant, if you've identified a gap in your capability, and responsibilities, and you don't have a full or even part time safety manager / officer, then a good safety consultant can save you getting into possible bother.

They should:
Review your policies and procedures, and identify gaps, and produce a corrective action plan, amending your P&P as relevent.
Where specific regulations apply, such as The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, The Electricity at Work Regulations, The Provision and Use of Equipment Regulations, etc., they should either have the in-house capability, or external contacts to ensure the various regulations are complied with, from an initial risk assessment, through to corrective action planning, re-certification, and periodic hazard reviews, to ensure your overall polices and procedures are aligned to the overarching HASAW, and The Management of Health and Safety Regulations. They may also provide relevant and targeted training, in conjunction with your own subject matter experts, and periodic refreshers.

They should not:
Produce reams of irrelevant paperwork, unrealistic corrective action plans, and ineffective training and working procedures.

Hi Regbuser, thanks for the overall insight, I am definitely of the view that safety consultants need to be punchy and to the point, avoid unnecessary paperwork or selling unnecessary products.

Safety Consultancy can cover a wide variety of remits, I think it would help to narrow down the sector you are trying to get info on.

^^^ This. However, part of the game is passing some "responsibility" to a third party. So make sure your consultants have comprehensive Professional Indemnity and Liability insurance
