Thieving Couriers
Discussion
As we're all working from home i asked our IT Dept to send me out an Apple Pen. An empty package arrived today with a very neat slit on one edge.
This was the firm named after the Greek messenger god who I assumed would be relatively honest, or at least not so blatant that they'd deliver a package that had been opened and emptied.
According to our IT Dept Hermes don't provide insurance for IT equipment. Does this mean they can literally steal anything which is IT related , without any comeback?

king annoyed tbh

In my experience Hermes are only as good as the local couriers at the end, many of which are self employed, using their own cars, and getting paid peanuts.
I was told that most of them get paid about 71 pence per parcel, meaning you would have to deliver 150 a day to get anything like a reasonable wage once you've paid for your petrol.
You can have some good local Hermes couriers or some absolutely terrible (and potentially dishonest) ones. I've been lucky in that the lady who used to deliver to my business on an industrial estate was an absolute gem. She was, bless her, as rough as anything and drove a clapped out Vectra filled to the brim with parcels, but she always delivered on time, knew where to leave parcels if you weren't there, and knew everyones names, so even if the name and address on the panel was incomplete or wrong, she still knew who it was for.
Same for the guy who delivers around the area where I live now. He's a retired chap in a VW Golf who says he does it just to keep busy, and he enjoys it. Really nice guy, and no issues.
But, there are so many horror stories with Hermes and their couriers that you really do roll the dice when you send anything with them.
If you've watched the Joe Lycett and the Watchdog programmes about Hermes, nothing will surprise you about them. Awful.

They will compensate for lost IT equipment but not damaged. They might argue that your parcel is damaged not lost but you can show them photos of the precise cut in your parcel as proof. There's a chance you'll get compensation if you explain the situation and the sender paid for insurance over the standard £25. I've been compensated in the past with less evidence (parcel delivered to bin on bin day...)
I try to parcel stuff so that you cannot tell what's inside because I'm sure, like you, that sometimes the couriers can tell what's in the parcel and know how to pinch things without getting caught.
Yep it must be a unique industry where they can be negligent and straight up lose your item but somehow don't have to pay.
I sent a monitor via Parcelforce last month which went all the way through their system, scanned on to a delivery van and then mysteriously disappeared. The courier just said it wasn't on his van and that was that. Thieving c***ts

It's really not a complicated or shady setup. They trade their liability for a lower cost to the consumer.
If you want them to take full liability for the goods, you pay more. Most people don't.
A lot of people want the low price with the liability retained - unfortunately it doesn't work that way.

I've always been refunded for lost parcels by this company.
They refund without question if the tracking doesn't say "delivered"
They've "delivered" the envelope but it's empty...They refund without question if the tracking doesn't say "delivered"

Like I said, just explain the situation to them, I've been compensated with less proof than you have.
The IT guy who sent it out to me is going to take it up with them. I know they've been couriering lots of stuff to staff over the last 2 years because of the pandemic so hopefully he'll get a positive outcome.Road2Ruin said:
How did they know it was an Apple Pen? Sounds a bit random to me.
I’ve no idea. My guess is he opened it, found what was inside and decided to keep it. I’ve had packages in the past that had been slightly opened but nothing taken, I’d just assumed that they had been damaged in transit.Gassing Station | Business | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
