I had been hoping to deregister from vat before now, but that hasn't happened so I now need to submit a return using mtd-compliant software. All data is in an Excel spreadsheet. I don't want to have to invest in a new product as it will hopefully only be for one or two returns. A quick Google shows that ANNA has what they claim to be a compliant add-in available for free. Does anyone have experience of this, or know of any free alternatives?

If you log in to the HMRC website using your GG creds then I am pretty sure you can still go to "VAT" and enter the period details in manually

You could at the end of January as that's what I did

Might be worth logging in and having a look

Aside from "Anna", "filemyvatreturn" and "taxoptimiser" are decent and FOC I think - if not, google as there are a number of free products listed.

What is the VAT return period you are returning?

I managed to submit a return for Jan-Mar 2022 today without having to use MTD compliant software (putting details straight into the HMRC website).

However, I believe it is the last quarter I'll be able to do so ... frown

Businesses need to have signed up to MTD for their first VAT return starting on or after 1 April 2022. They may not be required to make their first submission via MTD until Summer 2022.

So, if you are filing a VAT return for a quarter ending in March, April or May 2022, you can still do it "the old way".

Ah thanks - it's for the quarter ending March so I'm OK for now.

I use this one…

https://www.taxcalc.com/vat

Not free, but works well.

I'm also a TaxClac user - very painless (I upload my bookkeeping spreadsheet into TaxCalc and it does the rest)

Another vote for TaxCalc / VAT Filer here. About £20 per year, but about as easy as it gets to use.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Jan - March 2022 can still be submitted until 07th May the 'old' way.

However, even if deregistering today (May 4th) then April until today will need to be submitted to HMRC via a third party, therefore meaning subscribing to the 'new' system to cover this period of approx' 5 weeks?

Thanks in advance!
