I do some photography work as a sideline (sole trader basis with very small turnover at the moment) and was thinking about doing a stand at a couple of local car shows to drum up some business. I need appropriate public liability insurance, just in case someone stubs their toe or bangs their head on my tent or something and sues the show organisers. The photographer insurance firms I've checked with say their liability cover only covers me while I'm actually taking pictures, not at something like this.

So I'm looking for some basic public liability cover (min £1m apparently) which doesn't cost the earth, doesn't require limited company status etc. Any recommendations?

Use a broker - no more expensive than going direct.

Hiscox online should cover you.

Check the quotes, exhibition cover should be a fairly common extension to the liability.

Towergate used to have a camera / photography scheme.

When we did stands at Car Shows, Vintage Fairs, etc. with our business we bought insurance via Combined Market Traders

£5 million cover costs £59 per year and is very easy to set up, just fill in the online form.

I used contructaqoute for a broker, bought and never had to claim but all seemed well, £100 for a year but in construction smile

I used Gallagher for my public liability insurance. I have a tradesmen & professionals policy from AXA with cover up to 5m which didn't cost the earth. All done over the phone with really helpful account handlers.

Might be worth giving them a call.

If you haven't sorted it yet, Eversure have a photography product that will cover public liability insurance https://www.eversure.com/photography-insurance/

Thanks, I use them already for my equipment insurance and yes they do have liability cover but it doesn't extend to things like trade shows - only covered when actually taking photos apparently.

They cover PL for a photography business (even part time like yourself), but for non-business use then PL is limited to when using the insured equipment.

From the policy wording:

We will pay the amount of damages and Claimant’s Costs and Expenses which You become legally liable to pay in respect of an Accident occurring during the Period of Insurance which causes:
1 Bodily Injury to a third party, or
2 damage to the property of any third party
and arising:
a in the course of the Business, or
b from the ownership, possession or use of photography/videography equipment

Had the renewal email a couple days ago for my Public Liability insurance, ends on March 29 but they inform me now as it will auto renew.
Contacted them via online chat where they asked why I wished to cancel, told them I have found a identical policy for less then their renewal, straight away they tell me..."if you renenw with your current insurer we will send you a cheque for 10% of the renewal price", told them no thanks (even with the rebate it is still slightly more expensive), plus on principle I won't renew anyway.

A cheque, seriously? I guess if they include the discount offer in the renewal notice they lose money
