We are in the process of moving, and need to redirect phone and fax numbers. Any thoughts on whether it is better to have an auto-divert on the old numbers, or a BT interception/announcement.

I've used both on past moves and autodivert is better, although more expensive. It makes things more seamless. Use it until you have educated all your clients that you have moved or until current advertising has expired, although having said that, I still get calls from directories that were superceded some 5 years ago!

Did you know a 0845 number is only a one off payment of £10?

Never have this problem again!

Better yet, use VoIP and take your phone number with you like I do.

Where from..? I could be interested. Do you own them or are they owned by some unknown agency or something?

Just search google for 0845 numbers - there's hundereds of similar offers. AFAIK its a diversion service but you have rights to the number for as long as you use it.

Or get an 0870 number and earn a little revenue for each call (IIRC aprox 4p per min)

0845 and 0870 numbers are a rip-off for the consumer and p1ss me off no end, particularly when they keep you on hold forever whilst you pay for it!

I think what really bugs me is that my VoIP phone is free for all landline numbers, but those businesses with 0845 and 0870 mean I still have to pay for calling them.

If you do not want to pay for dialing 0870 numbers then try searching on this site.

It gives you the landline alternative and then when you are sat on hold you do not have to worry about being ripped off.

Hope that helps

It's a common misconception that 0870 numbers are a rip off. They are charged the same by the line provider as a standard national call.

The problem comes when calling them from a mobile - the mobile operators won't accept them as part of your all-inclusive minutes and charge you their additional minutes rate. If you ring from a landline you don't have this problem.

The numbers to watch out for are 090 numbers as they are premium rate.

I would go for 0845 numbers as they are local rate. The real benefit of these numbers is the information they give rather than any earnings. You can get them free or pay a small charge but check what type of info you get and how it is presented.

Many uses of these numbers as a marketing response measurement tool - www.bdm-ltd.co.uk .

Unfortunatly that is not quite right 0870 are charged at BT Std Biz national rate which is 6.72p. The problem comes that vitually no one is paying Standard BT Rates anymore (as a business you should be paying between 1.5 and 2p for a national call) 0870 is still priced at 6.72p making it about 4 times as expensive as a normal national call (in fact the buy rate for switchless resellers is about 6.5p - so no one but BT is making any money out of it anyway)

I agree with you about the management reports although they can be used with numbers other than 0870's where it gets really sexy is when they start routing geographically (We have a customer with 45 branches around the uk and when you call their 0845 number it routes you straight to your closest branch based on the location you called from)

A national call from my mobile is usually free (unless I go above 500 mins anyway). An 0870 call costs 20p a minute from the same handset.
