Buying an electric car - new or used?

Looking to buy an electric car through my company due to the obvious benefits but one question I'm struggling to find the answer to is does it need to be new?
Could I buy a used VAT qualifying car (we are VAT registered) and get the same benefits as buying a new car? Current delivery times of certain new models are around 12 months so I don't want to wait that long.
