Hi folks,

I am currently involved in discussions on the birth of a new nationwide business portal for an Eastern European country. It's one of these standard directory type-things, with free listings for businesses but with enhanced options for a fee.

I am fairly new to this sort of thing, but these days this is not such a huge undertaking, especially if you buy an off-the-shelf package.

I just have a couple of quick questions regarding the hosting we will need, and if a good answer is provided, please let me know your URL so I can put you at the top of the shortlist for the business.

Initial targets are in the region of a few thousand unique hits a day, with for the sake of argument a million records. 100% (or as close to) uptime is an absolute priority. Daily backups would also probably be a requirement. A massive pipe straight into a backbone goes without saying.

As I am new to this sort of thing, I'm not positive on what the exact web space and bandwidth requirements will be, but I expect in any case we're talking dedicated servers.

Can anyone just give me a rough ballpark cost projection of how much the hosting would cost? This is not going to be a yell.com, so it's not a case of balls-out no compromise, but we need something that is solid, reliable and easily scalable.

I cannot give any more information than that at this stage.

Just one final question: as the site will be a portal for a particular eastern European country, which is unlikely to have a good selection of hosts of the calibre that we require, is it a problem at all to host in the UK or US instead of in the target country? Just thinking about the latency.

Any feedback appreciated.
Rudi

If its European based, then the closer you are, the better the latency, but anything this side of the US will be nippy. Its the transatlantic link that costs the most delay.

I will drop you a mail.
