Hi Guys,

I have been doing a small bit of brewing mead specifically at home for personal consumption and was wondering what I would basically need to do as an outline to sell at local market on a Saturday with my own stall. If things go well (I'm not saying they will) but I would like to sell online and put in local shops - but that is a different question for a different day. What do I legally need to do to be able to sell at a market?

thanks in advance

The most obvious thing is apply for an alcohol licence. Can potentially, initially anyway, be done under a temporary event notice but it will also depend what licence the market operator has.

HMRC will also be interested, partly due to the income you'll be generating that they will want to tax, but they'll also their duty as well.

As you’re producing a product for retail human consumption (as a commercial venture) then you’ll need to ensure you have food standards in place from a hygiene perspective. You’ll also need to do some analysis on the product for nutritional and allergens declarations etc.

You’ll also be needing public liability and product indemnity insurance.

You will also need to label it as per the legal and nutritional requirements, stating alcohol contents, ingredients etc.

Sounds like you are advising from a knowledgable position. Interesting to find out more about the requirement for nutritional analysis? Allergen declarations, yes, that would apply to all food/drink items but nutrition for small scale market sales? And product indemnity insurance? I know what it is and people that have similar in place, but not for casual local market sales on a Saturday. Is it actually a requirement now to have public and product liability? Just registering as a food business was the only legal requirement as such.

No need for nutritional info on alcoholic drinks

You do need warning labels though, "warning may induce cravings for a kebab"
