2-post hydraulic lifts

Really it depends on what your intended use is.
For commercial I would go new and from a reputable supplier like Tecalemit, Bradbury or Hoffmann. I paid £2600 for a 3phase baseless 3 tonne Hoffmann and its a great bit of kit.
For home use then ebay is not a bad source. Look for one coming out of a closed down Kwik-Fit or main dealer as this will have been serviced and certificated at least twice a year.

its for commercial use (cars only, not commercial vehicles) and ideally I only really want to allow a spend of £1,500-£1,700 which would immediately put e-bay in the frame.
However, I would prefer to buy from a reputable supplier.
Have had one quote for finance on a brand new lift over 3yrs but it works out quite expensive for a new start-up company and we've so far managed to get going without needing any kind of loans or finance and I really want to keep it that way!

If its for commercial use then up your 3ton to 4ton. A Volvo XC90 requires a 3.5 ton lift and almost any Range Rover, Disco or equivalent 4x4 will be marginal on a 3ton lift.
Oddly enough, as we are Volvo approved we are having to uprate our lift for exactly this reason.
Do you have 3phase? You are going to struggle to get a decent lift if you only have single phase power.
MachineMart may sell some cheap kit but I wouldn't bet my life on working under a 3ton car supported by a MachineMart vehicle lift.
Please bear in mind that your insurance policy WILL insist on a twice yearly engineering inspection on all lifting equipment. Trolley jacks included. A 2nd hand lift may look cheap on eBay but if it needs replacement screws or cables (depending on operation) then you are into a big maintenance bill and no inspection pass.
I wouldn't muck around. If you don't want to finance it then stick it on a 0% credit card and shuffle from card to card for the next 3 years.
