Been thinking a bit about this today. My brother has lived stateside for about 6 years now and loves it. I've been working properly for just 6 months since uni in the UK.

Anyone done both? Any pros and cons of either?

My current feeling is the UK government seems to put a lot of restrictions on people setting up business and trying to be successful. The USA seems to encourage entrepreneurs a bit more?

I'm very content with the UK, but its always nice to learn about other countries and how the work experience is.

Any views would be great

I actually don't think that there are too many government obstacles to those wanting to set up their own business in the UK. Of course, it does depend on the nature of the business you want to set up as to whether you have to comply with too many rules and regulations or whether you need to employ people.

In fact, it is employment regulations which probably mark out the difference between here and the US. However, as you probably would not be setting up a business in the US and would more likely be an employee, maybe the UK is better on that score.

The biggest restriction on new business in the UK doesn't come from government. It comes from the financial institutoipons who are pretty conservative. They either don't want to lend money to new-start businesses or they want a return on their investment in far too short a time span.

Once you've got over the initial hurdle of getting a Visa which is not at all easy without working for a company that has two offices, one here one there, someone willing to drop a chunk of change in investment or having a good degree and working in a niche sector.

Once you get there there are a number of differences:

They start at 8am

They only get 10 days annual leave + admittedly slightly more public holidays

They have a hugely strong work ethic, something the UK sadly lacks

They put a lot more emphasis on the quality of employment life, you really do matter to US bosses

You'll average more hours for a US firm but strangely be happier doing it.

Oh and they clap in meetings, which amused me greatly, except at the 8am meetings.

It compiled, wooo, way to go Bob...

Any specifics, drop me an email, happy to help.

Thanks for the answers

I was just thinking that there were real differences that I couldn't quite put my finger on. I also deal with a lot of Canadian and American clients at work and if I can understand their work mentality it would help our relationship as well
