As it say's on the tin really, how much can you take from profits on shares before you start paying Capital Gains tax? £8500 seems to ring a bell.

I believe its £7K. Last I checked, anyway...

It is currently £8500 (for year 2005-2006)

For year 2004-2005 it was £8200

£8,500 is correct for all Gains in the year up to 5 April 2006. Computing the actual taxable gain is not that straightforward however as all kinds of things need to be taken into account before arriving at a final taxable figure (indexation, taper relief, buying costs, selling costs etc).
