Amateur web developer here! Whats the current thinking about what size you write the web page for to avoid uneccesary scrolling up/down right/left? i.e. do you go for a std 800x600 that can be viewed in most browsers (unless the PC is really so old!) or do you write for the seemingly excepted 1024x768 and force the 800x600 users to scroll...

Or is there a clever way of designing for both???

personally I dont mind scrolling on a smaller screen, providing it is ONLY up and down, so I'd go for 800 - I know a lot are going to the 1k's but it really pees me off having to scroll left and right to read/see something.

Dont forget there are plenty of people who have their new format larger screens still at 800 for sight reasons.

Good point, 800 is the common denominator but a little restrictive.....

well you can make the table size auto adjust and restrict only some of the table, but you'll have to be careful with your design. Dont forget to test drive it on several platforms though as they can treat things a little differently!

Over 75% now have 1024 or greater, but you need to do some research on your target demographic.

It really depends on the target audience. Most of our sites' users are office-based for financial services, and our stats show even greater than 75%. But we usually build for no scrolling at 800, with elasticity for larger resolutions. Some of our clients specify 1024 and to hell with those who have small screens.
