Had a question from one of my clients.

"My wife is British and holds an England passport. As an American married to a UK citizen are you aware of what my visa status would be and if I am allowed to work in the UK?"

Anybody know the answer??

Thanks in advance

What's an "England" passport.

I would assume he needs to apply for a work visa to allow him to work in the UK. Having a wife who is a UK Passport holder will not allow him in as a worker automatically.

They will need to apply for a Limited Leave to Remain (LLR) visa, from memory these are now valid for 12 months, after which you then apply for an Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) visa.

When they have the LLR they can apply for an NI number and then start work.

Last time I had to go through this (only once thank god) you had to apply for the LLR from a US Consulate overseas. A spouse of a UK citizen must enter the country on either a LLR or ILR visa and will be denied entry under the UK visa waiver scheme. *

* I went through this when I married a USC 6 years ago, so it may have changed since then.

A good place to start looking is here - www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/
