planned payment scheme
Discussion
i am a customer of 5 years standing useing a supplier for domestic fuel oil
i pay £40 pcm by direct debit and order fuel annually as required
i ordered my usual amount by phone last week and it was delivered by friday followed later that morning by a letter asking for an increase to £60 pcm or a one off payment of £200 and 14 days to decide
they could have mentioned it when i phoned/or held the delivery until we had agreed a way foreward so i feel they have taken advantage
i am unclear how i stand so would appreciate any opinions on the options

Do you have an alternative supplier able to supply?
Does the £40pcm actually cover the costs of the fuel?
If yes to both, give the alternative chaps a ring, explain the situation, and set something up with them for next time you need a delivery.
As for the original suppliers, you have no choice but to pay them. I'd be tempted to do a cheque for the lot, with a letter explaining why you have no intention of using them again, and will be explaining the situation to friends and family.

i have no intention not to pay the suppliers
if i said come and collect the fuel at your cost and close my account they may say no its your fuel you owe us full payment now so i wont do that
if i said i want to stick to the original deal what can they do?
they can demand payment in full and persue payment as a debt but as i will be paying my direct debit as agreed where will that get them?
can they increase my direct debit unilaterally?
can they extract the full debt in one installment without my agreement?
the original mandate is very basic and dosnt elaborate what happens
i want to continue to pay the original amount and pay off the balance which will take 14 months and i will then look for an alternative deal
i cant afford to pay the whole lot off in one go but in a years time i will have budgeted for the higher payments as i expect oil prices to remain high in the long term
