I'm being made redundant

I currently work for a small accountancy firm in Milton Keynes and have been told they're not sure how much longer the money is going to last, so I've been advised to start looking for another job.

My skills list is quite long, I'm a book-keeper with a good all round knowledge of accounts, an audio and touch typist and have been a PA to directors of three small companies.

If you know anyone who is looking for a good all round professional office administrator in the Milton Keynes/South Northampton area, please contact me and I'll send you my C.V.

Sad to hear that, Mrs Trackside. Perhaps your request will be read by someone on PH looking for new staff. Are you wedded to where you live or are you able to travel any distance for the right job?

PS: Your use of unusual Smilies is always entertaining.

You just want a smilie kiss don't you LA?

I don't really want to travel too far, and I certainly don't want to move, but I'm open to negotiation for the right job.

Hey, 2SBs got a hug but I got a kiss. Cool.
Serious question: Can you widen your net a little? - is there any institution you've always wanted to work for that can use your skills, one not in the same line as your current company.

Interesting question and not one I've really thought of before. The abilities I've got are very transferrable to any line and size of business.

You mean, of your own? hehe

I was thinking about other occupations like working in a vet's surgery, or museums, or local radio, something with a bit of pizzazz, new challenges every-so-often. Most folk have something they wanted to do when younger but got deflected from for some reason or another.

I certainly don't want to work with children, but I like animals

I'm a bit shell shocked at the moment as I didn't expect to have to look for a job. I'm not too fussy where I work and apart from being a chat show host, there's not much I've always wanted to do

Well, in that case there must be other lines you can fit in. Question is, how do you go about finding them now? - being "proactive" is the cliched business word, I believe.

I'm looking. I've registered with some agencies around here and applied to some jobs in the paper. I just thought I'd post something on here as well, in case anyone is looking for someone but haven't done anything about it yet.

If it comes to it, I can temp, but I'd prefer a permanent job.

I'll keep my ears open at work, as we have offices in that vicinity..........

Good luck, it always happens for the right reasons

Sorry to hear this Mrs T. I am always amazed by the number of accountancy firms that seem to suffer from financial worries. I've worked for two firms that actually went bust (after I had already left, I hasten to add).

I studied part time last year (after work) and found it really difficult to fit everything in. I was knackered! Unfortunately, we've got bills to pay and have just bought an Elise because I had no idea my job was on the line. Plus we go away on holiday this month, so money is very very tight, and I can't afford to not work.

I blame their accountants

Is the London commute out of the question? The train from MK isn't too bad, I used to get it from LB every so often and it was reliable enough.

Troopriziz - you are not altogether wrong.

Accountants are usually very good at pointing out to their clients where THEIR businesses are going wrong (and offering to fix things for exhorbitant fees) whilst ignoring fundamental problems in their own businesses.

well I MIGHT have a job! I had an interview on Tuesday for a job I thought I'd really like, but they think I'll get too bored and leave (which I wouldn't, coz it's a company with a very healthy bank account and that's what I need - security)

And I went for a job on Wednesday which turned out to be a lot less than I thought it would be, so I told them I didn't want it (plus it was paying less than I earn now). The Wednesday company have rung me and said they WANT me and there's definitely a job for me in the company, so I've got another interview with the big boss this evening. Fingers crossed, it might lead to something.

Other than that, I do have one, possibly two aces up my sleeve, but I'm going to see how this interview goes before I pull them out, as it's a bit of an underhanded way of doing things and not usually my style.

I'd like to go on holiday and know that I've got something lined up when I get back.

And accountants suck at business management!

Hi Tracey,

I might have a suggestion for you if you are able to do basic accounting?

A lot of people doing party plan that are self-employed need help with keeping records and submitting a tax return at the end of the year - I would love, but can't afford, someone to give everything to so that they can sort it all out for me just to fill in at the end of the year. I know of several people doing party plan in MK, one is my big boss, so it might be worth you looking at if you don't mind anything else - charge a fee per month for doing that month's records, then maybe another fee for a tax return?

Don't know if that is any use to you?

Good luck Mrs T.

Since you know how to do General bookkeeping it might be worth you while looking for a number of part time jobs with various clients. Many of my clients only have a bookkeeper who comes in once or twice a week.

I don't know what relevant skills you might have, but if you do not have experience of computerised bookkeeping packages, such as Sage, it would be well worth your time doing a course in it to increase your employability.

This is what I do already, Jaglover, and I do really enjoy it. I did toy with the idea of going on my own, but that's something you need to build up over time, which means having some money to fall back on while that happens.

Thanks to you too, WD, that's a good suggestion.

As it happens, I got offered a job on Friday, which I can do standing on my head with my hands behind my back. It's working for a major builders doing the purchase ledger to start with. I didn't want the job when I was first interviewed for it, but they insisted I went back for a second interview, because the last person has left it in a terrible mess (this seems to be a trend when I take a new job) and they need someone who knows what they're doing to sort it out. I went along to to be polite. They've offered me the same money I'm currently earning with a promotion in six months if I prove myself.

It's not quite what I had my mind set on doing, but sometimes you have to go backwards to go forwards, and what I really need at this moment in time is the security of knowing I'm not going to be made redundant again in six months time, which this job certainly offers.

I'm thinking about it and I'll give them an answer on Monday morning, because I don't want to accept the job for the wrong reasons because of my current situation.
